Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and the central plateau of the North
Island. At first the northern half of the South Island was also
affected. Temperatures became warm in the North Island. During
the next 2 days a depression passed far to the south-west, with the
associated trough crossing the South Island. Showers were reported
still in parts of the North Island and in coastal districts
of the South Island. On the 19th and 20th another similar trough
brought considerable rain to the West Coast, with light falls in
most other parts of the South Island. Temperatures became warm,
especially in the east.
The period from the 21st to the 29th was very dry. From the 21st
to the 24th an extensive belt of high pressure covered New Zealand
and extended over the South Tasman Sea and also eastward to the
Chatham Islands, while a depression was nearly stationary off the
northern coast of New South Wales. The weather was mainly fine
and sunny but a few showers were reported, especially in the
Gisborne district and around Auckland. During the next 5 days the
main centre of the anticyclone lay initially to the south-west of New
Zealand with a ridge extending over the country, and the whole
system moved slowly eastward. Isolated showers were reported,
especially over the central plateau of the North Island, but also at
times in Northland and on the West Coast.
On the last 2 days of the month the main centre of high pressure
lay far to the south-east of the Chatham Islands, while a small
depression passed close to Southland and another one was near
North Cape. Rain affected most of the North Island, besides the
West Coast, Southland, and parts of Otago.
