front moved on to the South Island on the 22nd and brought rain
as far north as Christchurch. Fine weather persisted in the North
Island except for a few showers in Northland. From the 23rd to
the 27th a series of weak cold fronts moved over the country in a
predominantly south-westerly flow and there was rain on each day
in areas exposed to the south-west.

An anticyclone crossed the North Island on the 28th and 29th
and moved rapidly away to the east on the 30th. It brought gen-

erally fine weather to the North Island. A cold front moving slowly
northward over the South Island on the 29th and 30th gave heavy
rain in the south-west of the South Island, with some places receiv-
ing a 3-day rainfall of an intensity which only occurs on the average
once in 2 years. This cold front moved on to the North Island on the
31st and the weather cleared in the South Island during the day.
