DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS book is written in the first person and tells the story
of a young Swedish woman's sexual adventures with a varied
succession of men.
It lacks any social or literary merit and the explicitness
with which the young lady recounts her sexual trysts renders
the book crude and offensive.
The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

No appearance by either applicant or distributors, but written submissions were made by the applicant.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS is a hardback edition of a book which has already been
circulating in New Zealand in a paperback edition. It appears
that the paperback edition was not submitted to the Tribunal.
The applicant for the hardback edition notified us that it was
no longer interested in the book and would not be distributing it.
The book itself is a manual or study of oral sexual techniques written by a man who is alleged to be an authority on the subject. It is without illustrations but has a detailed and explicit text on what are described as advanced sexual techniques. It is suggested that its price in New Zealand will be $15.00.
The Tribunal has on a number of previous occasions dealt with manuals of sexual techniques, but in all these cases there have been illustrations or photographs with accompanying text. In decisions 432 to 435 (New Zealand Gazette, 23 March 1972) the Tribunal laid down 3 categories of such publications comprising text and photographs and declared those which included oral sex as indecent in the hands of persons under the age of 18 years provided that they were also serious in intention, natural and restrained in presentation, accompanied by straightforward text, deal with the basic variations of normal intercourse, and carry an assumption of the more complex relationship of love. Underlying these principles is the distinction between straight enlightenment and pornography (where people are being got at).
Oragenitalism (and its paperback edition) differ from previous manuals in that it is directed solely to oral sexual techniques and has no photographs or other illustrations.
It is clearly serious in intent and is presented in a straightforward and restrained way. There is no suggestion of pornography in the sense mentioned above. It therefore falls within the general principles mentioned above.
The Tribunal believes that this book should be available to adults but because it is concerned solely with oral sex should be restricted to adults.
The Tribunal classifies Oragenitalism as indecent in the hands of persons under 18 years of age.
