THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
No.27
By the 15th another trough of low pressure was approaching
from the south-west, bringing rain again to the West Coast. The
trough crossed most of the country during the next 2 days with
pressures rising rapidly behind it. Many districts received some
rain, especially those about Cook Strait and also the Bay of Plenty
During the 18th and 19th the trough was almost stationary over
the North Island with some rain in many districts there.
By the 20th an anticyclone was centred near the Chatham Islands
and a depression passed eastward close to Campbell Island. The
associated trough of low pressure became almost stationary for the
next 3 days over the southern half of the South Island, while at the
same time a depression approached New Zealand from the north.
Rain affected the whole of the South Island, with some particularly
heavy falls in Fiordland and South Westland on the 23rd. Some rain
also affected Northland and Bay of Plenty. Temperatures were
warmer than normal north of the trough and colder than normal
south of it. By the 24th an anticyclone was centred to the south-
west but the trough was still somewhat active, bringing rain mainly
to Westland and Canterbury; while the depression in the north
brought further rain to Northland and Bay of Plenty. During the
next 2 days, as the anticyclone moved across the South Island and
to the east, the depression remained active in the north, with rain
especially in eastern districts. Temperatures became cold in the
east.
During the last 2 days of the month a deep depression crossed
the South Island. Rain was fairly general, and temperatures be-
came very cold in eastern districts of the South Island with a
southerly change on the 28th.
