Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 402—Inquiry Concerning Protection for New Zealand Industry in Respect of Rennet of Tariff Items 21.07.021, 29.40.001, and 29.40.002

  1. In a letter of 12 June 1974, the Minister of Customs requested the Board to undertake an inquiry and report, with the objective of providing Government with a basis for restructuring and updating the Tariff to establish, where possible, adequate rates of duty protection in respect of rennet classified in Tariff items 21.07.021, 29.40.001, and 29.40.002. The present Tariff provisions for these goods, effective from 1 July 1974, are set out in the Schedule to this notice. The Minister asked that the Board should recommend, if possible, tariff rates which would provide adequate protection whether import licensing was continued, modified, or removed and should, if such action was considered to be appropriate in relation to the goods under inquiry, comment upon and compare the relative merits of both duties and import licensing as means of protection when used jointly or separately.

  2. This request replaces an earlier reference of 13 March 1972, in respect of which the Board scheduled a public hearing for 31 August 1972, which hearing was subsequently postponed (see Notices 287 and 313, New Zealand Gazette of 29 June 1972 and 26 October 1972 respectively).

  3. For the purpose of taking evidence the Board will hold a public hearing in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, on Tuesday, 26 November 1974 commencing at 10.30 a.m.

  4. Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence, to be presented under oath at the public hearing, at the Board’s office no later than Wednesday, 30 October 1974. In preparing this evidence the “Notes for Information and Guidance of Interested Parties” prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board’s office.

Dated at Wellington this 18th day of June 1974.

F. E. BEAUFORT, Secretary, Tariff and Development Board.

P.O. Box 27-046, Wellington.
