30 MAY
THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
On the 13th a very active trough of low pressure was approaching
from the west and there was widespread rain over the South
Island. This trough produced some very heavy rainfalls as it crossed
the country. This resulted in flooding in the Nelson Province and
on the West Coast, and some local severe flooding in Christchurch.
Many other places experienced surface flooding. On the 16th the
daily rainfall at Christchurch was of an intensity to be expected less
than once in 50 years. During the period 16th to 22nd as the trough
moved slowly eastwards to cross the North Island there was further
widespread rain over the North Island and the first significant
rain at Taupo (160 mm) for several months.
By the 23rd a large anticyclone was approaching Fiordland and a
small depression, on the western edge of the large trough lay just
east of Hawke's Bay. Rain was widespread in eastern districts
of the North Island on the 23rd and there was some rain on each
day till the 30th in this area. A low pressure area remained east of
the North Island till the end of the month resulting in persistent
south-easterlies over the country.
On the 26th a fast moving cold front moved northwards over the
country bringing a freshening of southerly winds. These became
storm force about Cook Strait on the 27th but gradually decreased
on the 28th and 29th.
The disturbed weather pattern which had characterised the month
ended on the 30th with an anticyclone to the south-east of the South
Island extending a ridge of high pressure across the country in the
direction of Norfolk Island.
