NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JULY 1973
General-Barometric pressures were exceptionally high to the south of New Zealand and over the South Island in July and easterly winds were unusually frequent. It was a sunny month and also dry—in the South Island one of the driest Julys on record. The absence of storms proved beneficial to stock, but some farmers in both Islands found conditions too dry.
The lack of rain, following comparatively dry conditions since the beginning of the year, affected the supply of hydro-electric power, causing a shortage. Lake Taupo was reported to be particularly low.
Rainfall—Over the South Island rainfall averaged only one-third of the normal value. On the West Coast, in the Alps, and the Canterbury high country, and over most of Otago it was less than a quarter of the normal. Over the North Island rainfall was mainly half the normal value. However, over most of Northland and parts of Coromandel it was above normal.
Flooding occurred in and around Whangarei on the 16th after 150-200 mm of rain in a day.
Temperatures—Temperatures were close to normal. The mildest part of the month was from the 16th to the 23rd, in north-easterlies.
As in June, little or no snow was reported on most of the mountain ranges.
Sunshine—Sunshine was 30-80 hours above normal over the greater part of the South Island and also over a considerable area extending from Taranaki north-eastward to Rotorua. The only areas with sunshine appreciably below normal, by 15-50 hours, were east of the ranges in the North Island and around Christchurch.
The highest July sunshine in 30-40 years of observation was recorded by New Plymouth with 194 hours and Westport with 182 hours. Taumarunui and Ohakune were also favoured with exceptionally high sunshine for July.
Weather Sequence—During the first 2 days of July an intense anticyclone was centred over the South Island. Showers were reported in eastern Northland, Gisborne, and Wairarapa. However, the weather became fine and frosty generally as the anticyclone moved northward on the 3rd and 4th.
During the 5th and 6th a shallow depression off the Fiordland coast moved north-eastward with an associated trough, bringing general light rain. As the trough moved eastward on the following
day another weak trough crossed the South Island. Rain persisted in Gisborne and on parts of the West Coast and the Southland coast. On the 8th an anticyclone was centred over Tasmania and south-westerlies predominated over New Zealand, bringing light showers to a few areas.
The anticyclone over Tasmania moved south-eastward to the south of the South Island, and cold southerlies developed on the 9th and 10th with showers in eastern districts and about Cook Strait. During the next 2 days the anticyclone moved north-eastward to the east of the South Island and a depression passed to the north. Winds over the North Island became easterly, but temperatures remained cold and showers were now reported in Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay. Conditions remained very similar during the 13th and 14th as another depression passed to the north, but showers from the easterlies spread down the east coast as far south as Christchurch.
From the 15th to the 17th the same intense anticyclone was centred south of the Chatham Islands and a depression passed to the west of Northland. Winds became north-easterly with milder temperatures, but the distribution of rain remained similar. Heavy falls were reported around Whangarei with some flooding. During the next 3 days the anticyclone remained stationary while pressures were low over the north-west Tasman Sea. In the mild northeasterlies showers persisted in Gisborne, Coromandel, and Northland.
From the 21st to the 23rd a complex trough crossed New Zealand from east to west with centres of low pressure over both islands. Rain was fairly general, except for Canterbury and Otago. As the complex trough moved to the east during the next 3 days winds gradually changed to south-easterly. The weather was unsettled over the North Island and in the east and south of the South Island, with showers at times.
From the 27th to the 29th an anticyclone moved to the south of the South Island while pressures remained low to the east. Cold southerlies developed again with showers in some eastern districts, but considerable rain in Gisborne. During the last 2 days of the month the anticyclone was centred over the South Island and a small depression crossed northern Northland with rain there. Showers were still reported in parts of northern Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.
