The "normal" refers to the present site of the instruments. The standard periods for normals are: for temperature 1931–60, for rainfall
1921–50, and for sunshine 1935–60. No normals are available for stations with only short records.
*The sunshine recorder is not located at the station but is in the near vicinity.
A rain day is a day with rainfall equal to or greater than 0.1 mm.
NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR DECEMBER 1972
General—Pressures were unusually low over New Zealand in
December, and the weather was cool and windy. Over the northern
half of the North Island good growth was reported, but elsewhere
conditions were too dry, with a shortage of feed in some eastern
districts.
Rainfall—Rainfall was below normal over the greater part of the
South Island, mainly by 25 percent, and also over the southern
half of the North Island, mainly by 50 percent. Blenheim received
only 13 mm and Nelson 17 mm.
On the other hand, rainfall was more than double the normal
value in Northern Hawke's Bay and the southern part of the
Gisborne district. In this area some particularly heavy rain was
recorded on the 1st and 2nd, with as much as 320 mm over the 2
days.
Temperatures—Temperatures were mainly below normal by
1°C. Highest departures were recorded in parts of Canterbury
and in Central Otago. The coldest part of the month was the first
week and also the 13th and 14th. Conditions were particularly
wintry in eastern districts on the 1st and 2nd.
In Auckland and most of Northland temperatures were normal.
Sunshine—Sunshine was close to normal over the greater part of
the country, especially the South Island. However, it was up to 45
hours below normal in Northland and Auckland and also in south
Taranaki, Wanganui, and Manawatu, besides western Southland.
Weather Sequence—The first week of December was particularly
cold. On the first 2 days a depression was centred east of Cook
Strait, while anticyclones were centred over the Tasman Sea
and to the south-east of the South Island. Rain affected the North
Island and North Canterbury in the south-easterlies with particularly
wintry temperatures. Pressures remained low to the east
during the 3rd and 4th while a trough of low pressure crossed the
South Island with rain there. On the following day a depression
over the North Tasman Sea moved on to Auckland. Rain spread
to most of the North Island but there was a clearance in the
southern half of the South Island. As the depression moved eastward on the 6th considerable rain was recorded in Bay of Plenty,
Gisborne, and Taranaki, but the weather cleared over the remainder of the South Island. The clearance extended to the North
Island on the 7th, with a belt of high pressure extending across the
country from north-west to south-east.
During the 8th and 9th a trough of low pressure moved northeastward over New Zealand accompanied by rain over the South
Island and some scattered falls over the North Island. On the
following day a small depression formed on the trough west of
Northland causing rain in that district, while the weather cleared
in most other districts. During the 11th and 12th a very deep
depression far to the south-west moved south-eastward, while the
associated troughs of low pressure crossed the country. Rain was
reported mainly west of the ranges but also in Southland and
Otago. During the next 2 days a depression formed on the trough
near the Chatham Islands and winds turned to cold southerlies.
Rain was general on the 13th but restricted mainly to the northern
half of the North Island on the 14th. Snow fell on the ranges of
both Islands. Pressures remained low to the east during the next 2
days and a weak trough developed in the south-westerlies. Rain
was reported mainly on the West Coast but there were scattered
falls elsewhere, mainly light, from Egmont southward.
During the 17th and 18th a trough with a small depression
moved on to the South Island from the west with rain west of the
ranges and in Southland and parts of Otago. As the depression
moved eastward off the Otago coast on the following day conditions
remained somewhat similar. However, as it moved further away
to the east on the 20th and 21st, showers were restricted to eastern
districts, but soon clearing in the South Island. Temperatures
were again cold in the southerlies. On the following day the weather
cleared over the North Island but a weak trough still affected parts
of the South Island and temperatures remained cold.
During the 23rd to the 25th a very deep depression passed close
to Southland and then moved away southward, while the associated troughs of low pressure crossed the country. This was the
wettest part of the month, with general rain. However, the falls
were mainly light east of the ranges and about Cook Strait. As the
depression moved further away during the next 2 days there was a
clearance in many districts. However, in the cold south-westerlies
scattered showers were still reported, especially over the northern
half of the North Island. From the 28th to the 30th an anticyclone
was centred to the east of the North Island. A small depression
west of Northland caused rain over the northern half of the North
Island, while a trough in the far south affected Fiordland and
coastal Southland. On the last day of the month another trough of
low pressure caused rain, mainly on the West Coast.
