Appointment of Committee of Inquiry Under Section 13 of the Trade and Industry Act 1956, to Inquire into the Price of Fish in Auckland and Tauranga

  1. Pursuant to section 13 of the Trade and Industry Act 1956, the Minister of Trade and Industry hereby appoints
    Mate Paunovic
    to be a Committee to inquire into, investigate, and report on the price of fish in Auckland and Tauranga.

  2. The Committee shall be called the Committee of Inquiry into the Price of Fish in Auckland and Tauranga.

  3. In the inquiry into the price of fish in Auckland and Tauranga the Committee shall have regard to the following matters:
    (1) The extent of competition in the wholesaling and retailing of fish, and whether, in the interests of restraining price increases, steps should be taken to increase that competition.
    (2) The current price of fish at all levels of supply and distribution and the changes in price which have occurred over the past 3 years.
    (3) The principal factors contributing to the increases in the price of fish and the influence of export sales on local prices.
    (4) The gross margin incorporated in the prices obtaining at each level of the supply and distribution of fish, and the extent to which these margins are absorbed by operating costs and the amount of net profit remaining to reward investment in the various sections of the industry.
    (5) The methods employed in the supply and distribution of fish, including the presentation of fish for sale to the consumer, together with any improvements that may be desirable, particularly those which would have a favourable influence on price.

  4. In the inquiry into the price of fish in Auckland and Tauranga the Committee shall have regard to such matters as may from time to time be notified to it by the Minister of Trade and Industry.

  5. The Committee shall submit its report and recommendations to the Minister of Trade and Industry as soon as practicable.
