Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 385—Inquiries Concerning Tariff Protection for Various Goods
PUBLIC HEARINGS
-
In letters of 22 June 1973 and 5 October 1973 the Minister of Customs asked the Board to undertake inquiries into the goods listed in the attached Schedules with the objective of providing Government with a basis for restructuring and updating the Tariff to establish, where possible, adequate rates of duty protection on the goods involved.
-
For the purpose of taking evidence the Board will hold public hearings commencing at the times and on the dates shown below in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington.
| Goods | Time and Date of Public Hearing | Closing Date for Receipt of Representations | Tariff Provisions Items Under Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unwrought aluminium of ex Tariff heading 76.01 | 10.30 a.m., Tuesday, 11 June 1974 | 11 May 1974 | Schedule A |
| Salt of ex Tariff heading 25.01 | 10.30 a.m., Tuesday, 18 June 1974 | 18 May 1974 | Schedule B |
-
Parties intending to make representations or requests about appropriate rates of customs duty are asked to take into account the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the phasing out of British preferences from the New Zealand Tariff, the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Trade and Industry on the interim New Zealand - Australia Trade Agreement 1973 and the statement of 27 July 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the New Zealand - Canada Trade Agreement 1973. Copies of these statements can be obtained from the undersigned. In a letter dated 6 April 1973 the Minister of Trade and Industry indicated that, while Government had asked the Board to consider the question of a single tariff rate, for trade policy reasons the Board’s recommendations on this aspect would not necessarily be made public for the time being.
-
The attention of interested parties is drawn to the fact that the Board may find it appropriate to comment upon and compare the relative merits of protection by means of tariff rates and import licensing when used jointly or separately.
-
Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence, to be presented under oath at the public hearing, at the Board’s office no later than the dates shown above. In preparing this evidence the “Notes for Information and Guidance of Interested Parties” prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board’s office.
-
In any instance where no evidence is received in respect of any goods classified within a particular Tariff item the Board may recommend that no protective rates of duty be applied to those goods.
Dated at Wellington this 13th day of November 1973.
