Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 381—Inquiry Concerning Protection for New Zealand Industry Producing Continuous Filament Polyester Yarn—Public Hearing
-
In a letter of 6 September 1972, the Minister of Customs informed the Board that Government had accepted the Board's recommendations in its Report No. 189 and the Tariff provisions set out in the Schedule to this notice became effective on 8 September 1972. The Board had also recommended that a further inquiry be undertaken in 1974 and the Minister agreed, in view of the Board's comments regarding the current world market and marketing conditions, that a further inquiry should be held at that time. Accordingly, the Minister requested the Board to undertake in 1974 an inquiry and report as to the nature and extent of the protection, if any, it considers necessary for the New Zealand industry manufacturing continuous filament polyester yarn not bulked, stretch or texturised classified in Tariff items 51.01.033, 51.01.035, 51.01.036, and 51.01.038, the Tariff provisions for which are set out in the Schedule to this notice.
-
For the purpose of taking evidence the Board will hold a public hearing in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, on Tuesday, 9 July 1974, commencing at 10.30 a.m.
-
Parties intending to make representations or requests about appropriate rates of customs duty are asked to take into account the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the phasing out of British preferences from the New Zealand Tariff, the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Trade and Industry on the interim New Zealand - Australia Trade Agreement 1973 and the statement of 27 July 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the New Zealand - Canada Trade Agreement 1973. Copies of these statements can be obtained from the undersigned. In a letter dated 6 April 1973 the Minister of Trade and Industry indicated that, while Government had asked the Board to consider the question of a single tariff rate, for trade policy reasons the Board's recommendations on this aspect would not necessarily be made public for the time being.
-
Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence, to be presented under oath at the public hearing, at the Board's office no later than Monday, 10 June 1974. In preparing this evidence the "Notes for Information and Guidance of Interested Parties" prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board's office.
-
In any instance where no evidence is received in respect of any goods classified within a particular Tariff item the Board may recommend that no protective rates of duty be applied to those goods.
Dated at Wellington this 30th day of October 1973.
