NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR AUGUST 1972

General—August was cold, but sunny. Farmers in most districts described it as a variable month, with conditions not very favourable for lambing. In Otago and Southland 4 months of predominantly cloudy, cold, wet, weather had caused unhealthy conditions for stock, and some losses of sheep were reported. A violent north-easterly gale buffeted Kaikoura on the 12th, with a maximum gust to 85 knots on the Peninsula.

Rainfall—Rainfall was below normal over the greater part of the country. Over most of Hawke’s Bay and a considerable part of Canterbury, it was less than half the normal value. However, it was somewhat above normal in many northern districts of the North Island, in Nelson, and in most of Southland with parts of Otago.

Daily falls of up to 75 mm on the 8th caused flooding around Kawakawa, Northland. Hokitika and parts of the Nelson district also reported flooding after heavy rain on the 11th, amounting to 175 mm at Hokitika.

Temperature—Temperatures were below normal, mainly by 1°C. The coldest periods were from the 5th to 7th, the 14th and 15th, and the 26th to the 28th. On the night of the 26th several inches of snow fell to low levels in Marlborough, Wairarapa, and southern Hawke’s Bay, and this was reported to be the heaviest snow in these areas for some years.

In a large area extending from Waikato and Rotorua to Nelson and Marlborough this winter season of June, July, and August has been the coldest for at least 20 years and in some districts 30 years.

Sunshine—Sunshine was above normal by 20–60 hours over the greater part of the country. Westland with South Canterbury and most of Marlborough were especially favoured. However, over nearly the whole of the Southland Plain and in South Otago sunshine was up to 20 hours below normal.

Weather Sequence—During the first 3 days of August an anticyclone, south-east of Tasmania, moved towards Campbell Island while a depression was centred to the south-east of the Chatham Islands. Southerly to south-westerly winds covered the country, with showers at times in Southland, Otago, and parts of Canterbury; also Wairarapa, Wellington, Northern Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki. For the next 3 days the anticyclone moved slowly to the east of Campbell Island, while a depression passed far to the north. Showers were now mainly reported in eastern districts and in Northland, with colder temperatures. On the 7th the anticyclone was centred to the east of Otago with a ridge of high pressure over New Zealand and there were only isolated showers.

Pressures remained high to the east of New Zealand and the anticyclone was now centred to the south of the Chatham Islands. During the 8th and 9th a depression over the mid-Tasman Sea moved slowly towards the Fiordland coast and the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country. Considerable rain affected Northland on the 8th, with some flooding. There was also considerable rain in some other northern districts and on the West Coast, with light falls elsewhere, but little or none in eastern districts of the South Island. The following day brought a weak ridge with an improvement in the weather, but scattered showers were still reported. During the 11th and 12th a much deeper depression over the mid-Tasman travelled on a somewhat similar course, causing again considerable rain in northern and western districts of both Islands, with flooding in Nelson and Hokitika. Strong north-easterly gales affected especially Kaikoura. The depression next split into two centres covering the South Island and these moved slowly eastwards during the next 3 days, with rain affecting mainly the North Island west of the main ranges, but also some western and southern districts of the South Island. Snow was reported on the Desert Road in the North Island. The depression now moved south-eastward, while a cold front associated with another depression near Campbell Island crossed the country during the 16th and 17th. Winds became south-westerly to southerly with colder temperatures and fairly general rain, especially in western and central districts of the North Island. Snow was reported to low levels in Canterbury.

A depression passed to the north on the 18th and 19th while south-westerlies persisted over the South Island. A few showers were reported, mainly in the far north and the far south. An anticyclone moved over the south Tasman Sea towards the South Island and south-westerlies still persisted on the 20th and 21st with scattered light showers. During the next 2 days the anticyclone moved onto the South Island and the North Island in succession, but some showers were still reported. On the 24th and 25th westerly conditions prevailed with a weak trough, which brought rain to most districts except the north-east of the South Island and Northland.

During the 26th and 27th a cold front moved northward over the country while an anticyclone developed near Campbell Island. In the cold southerlies rain affected most districts at first, but was later restricted mainly to eastern districts of the North Island and Northland. Snow was reported to low levels in Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay, and heavy hail affected parts of Manawatu. On the following day the anticyclone was centred to the east and conditions were temporarily better. However, on the 29th a small depression west of Northland moved southward and the associated trough of low pressure brought rain to most of the North Island and some northern and western districts of the South Island. For the last 2 days of the month the anticyclone was centred far to the east while a shallow complex depression covered the Tasman Sea. Light ran was reported in the North Island south of Hamilton and in parts of the South Island.
