NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JANUARY 1972

General—January was rather a dry month, especially in the North Island. There were complaints of lack of growth due to dryness in scattered areas as far south as Canterbury, but generally the weather was favourable for farming. However, in Southland it was too unsettled for haymaking and shearing.

As hurricane “Carlotta” passed to the east of Auckland on the 23rd, some exceptionally high seas were reported from eastern Northland to Bay of Plenty, causing the worst damage at Whitianga, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Rainfall—Rainfall was more than 25 percent below normal over the greater part of the North Island and in Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, North Westland, the Alps, and the Canterbury high country. In most districts east of the ranges in the North Island and in Nelson it was more than 50 percent below normal.

It was wetter than normal in Southland and most of Otago, on the Canterbury Plains, and in Manawatu. Over most of Southland rainfall was more than 50 percent above normal.

Temperatures—Temperatures were more than 1°C cooler than normal in the greater part of the inland area from Lake Tekapo southward. Elsewhere they were close to normal.

Sunshine—Sunshine was mainly close to normal. However, most northern districts of the North Island had 20−50 hours below normal. On the other hand, Nelson was favoured with a particularly high monthly total of 306 hours.

Weather Sequence—On the first 2 days of January a deep depression was centred near Macquarie I. and the associated trough of low pressure moved eastward over the country. Rain was reported in many districts but it was light in the east and there was very little in Canterbury and Marlborough. Another weak trough crossed the country on the 3rd with rain mainly on the West Coast and in Bay of Plenty. However, some showers were reported on the Southland and Otago coast. For the next 2 days an anticyclone was centred near Tasmania and south−westerly winds predominated over New Zealand, with some scattered showers. During the 6th and 7th yet another trough of low pressure crossed the country, and a small depression formed on it east of Cook Strait. Rain was fairly general except in parts of the West Coast; and around Nelson hail damaged large quantities of fruit.

During the next 2 days an anticyclone was centred over the Tasman Sea but pressures were low near the Chatham Is. Some showers, mainly coastal and light, were reported in the south−westerlies. Conditions remained somewhat similar on the 10th and 11th as the anticyclone advanced on to New Zealand, with a weak southerly change giving showers in a few districts. From the 12th to the 14th a deep depression was passing to the south of Campbell I. and the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country. Considerable rain was reported on the West Coast and in the Alps. Southland and Otago also received some useful rain but elsewhere there were only light falls. From the 15th to the 18th the weather was settled under the influence of an anticyclone initially over the South Tasman Sea, and later covering the North Island.

On the 19th a trough of low pressure became stationary west to east, lying from Westland to Canterbury, with rain over the southern half of the South Island. Later this front retreated, and for the next 2 days the weather was settled under the influence of an anticyclone centred to the south of the South Island. By this time hurricane “Carlotta” had reached Norfolk I. and on the 22nd and 23rd it passed to the east of the North Island with rain from Northland to Wairarapa. Some strong winds were reported, and heavy seas combined with high tides caused damage in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula. By now the anticyclone was centred to the south−east of the South Island and during the next 2 days a weak trough affected Southland and the West Coast. During the 26th and 27th another anticyclone moved on to the country with settled weather.

On the 28th and 29th a trough of low pressure associated with a depression far to the south−west crossed New Zealand with general rain, mainly light in the east. During the last 2 days of the month another trough of low pressure brought fairly general rain to the South Island and scattered falls also in the North Island.
