✨ Weather and Bankruptcy Notices
The "normal" refers to the present site of the instruments. The standard periods for normals are: for temperature 1931–60, for rainfall 1921–50, and for sunshine 1935–60. No normals are available for stations with only short records.
*The sunshine recorder is not located at the station but is in the near vicinity.
A rain day is a day with rainfall equal to or greater than 0.1 mm.
NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR NOVEMBER 1972
General—November was a warm month but unusually cloudy in the North Island. It was also rather dry. The lack of rain was particularly noticeable in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, where it had persisted for several months, and in Marlborough, where this month was very dry. In these areas stock and crops were seriously affected, though good rains at the end of the month gave some relief. Elsewhere conditions for farming were variable but generally satisfactory.
Rainfall—Rainfall was mainly only three-quarters of the normal value. In Central Marlborough it was less than a quarter of the normal.
Rainfall was above normal on the West Coast and in parts of Canterbury; also in parts of Northland and of the Coromandel-Waikato-Waitomo area. Some heavy downpours were reported in northern districts of the North Island during thunderstorms on the 20th and 30th.
Temperatures—Temperatures were above normal by 2°C. in the North Island and by 1½°C. in the South Island. Highest departures were recorded in Taumarunui, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay, where this was by far the warmest November for at least 40 years. For the North Island as a whole this was one of the warmest Novembers on record; other warm Novembers were in 1923 and 1934.
The first half of the month was warmer than the second half.
The spring season of September, October, and November has been a warm one generally and the warmest on record in eastern districts from Gisborne to Canterbury.
Sunshine—Sunshine was below normal over most of the North Island and in Nelson and Central Otago. The deficiency was greatest in western and northern districts, where it reached 80 hours in some areas. It was by far the cloudiest November on record for a number of stations, including Whakarewarewa, Ruakura, and New Plymouth.
Weather Sequence—At the beginning of November an anticyclone centred to the east covered New Zealand and the weather was settled. On the 2nd a small depression crossed the South Island, causing considerable rain to fall on the West Coast and in the Alps with lighter falls in Southland, the Canterbury high country, Nelson, and west of the ranges in the North Island. On the following day a depression was centred over the North Tasman Sea and light rain was reported in the North Island.
The depression remained almost stationary during the 4th and 5th, while a warm front associated with it moved southward over the South Island, with rain there in most places. Conditions remained rather similar on the following day as the depression lost intensity and moved southward. An anticyclone was still centred far to the east of the North Island while pressures were low to the south of the country, and on the 7th a weak trough brought some rain to western districts as far north as Manawatu, and also to parts of Southland and Otago.
During the 8th and 9th a small depression crossed the South Island with the associated trough later affecting the North Island, and some rain was reported in many districts. For the next 2 days a large anticyclone with centres over the North Island and to the north of the Chatham Islands covered the country; and the weather was fine except for some rain in Fiordland.
On the 12th and 13th a very deep depression near Macquarie Island moved slowly north-eastward and the associated trough of low pressure crossed the South Island. In the strong westerlies excessive rain was reported on the West Coast and in the Alps. For the next 3 days the front was stationary over the North Island, while a depression was centred off the coast of New South Wales and an anticyclone near Tasmania. Some light rain was reported in the North Island. However, from the 17th to the 19th the anticyclone moved eastward across New Zealand and the weather was fine.
During the next 3 days a small depression crossed Northland from the west. The weather was unsettled in the North Island with rain in most districts and some thunderstorms, especially on the 20th. Light rain also affected parts of the South Island. On the 23rd an anticyclone was centred over the Tasman Sea and a trough in the south-westerlies brought scattered rain to both Islands. During the 24th and 25th an anticyclone moved across the North Island to the east and the weather was settled.
From the 26th to the 28th a depression was stationary west of the North Island, with a frontal system over it, while pressures built up to the south. Rain was reported in many parts of both Islands. During the last 2 days of the month the depression crossed Northland. In the easterlies rain became general, with some considerable falls in Bay of Plenty and in eastern districts north of Christchurch.
