DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS paperback novel which we note is a “Adult Special” is about the lesbian relationship of three women. The story is thinly contrived and tedious to read. There is an endless detail of lesbian sexual encounters which leads us to declare the book as indecent.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 589

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for a decision in respect of the book Advance Sexual Joys by Gilbert Oakley, D.Psy., published by Bens Books Ltd., London.

Miss Bryson appeared on behalf of the applicant. There was no appearance of the publisher’s representative in New Zealand. No submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS paperback written by Dr Oakley who is a specialist in sexology gives detailed advice on how to make the best possible use of the function of the orgasm and describes and advises on sexual techniques for men and women.

At the end of the book there are 44 photographic illustrations of coital postures which are detailed in the text of the book. The photographs are not posed suggestively and the text is informative.

Because of the adult nature of its contents some restriction should be placed on it.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent in the hands of persons under the age of 18 years.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 590

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Seven Seas Publishing Pty. Ltd. for a decision in respect of the book Sexual Harmony in a Motor Car by Elizabeth Indigo, published by Fitzwilliam Publishing Co., London.

There was no appearance of the applicant. Accordingly no submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS is a book of a 100 photographs and in 3 languages all about sexual intercourse inside and on top of a car. The introduction says that “as driving now is little enough fun, and making love is, Fitzwilliam Press have produced this diverting little guide to add variety and invention” to your drive. If it were as funny as it could well be, the humour might have saved it. It is however merely ridiculous, and in our view obscenely so.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 591

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Seven Seas Publishing Pty. Ltd. for a decision in respect of the book The Truth About Incest by Daniel Hasokes, published by Riverhaven Ltd., London.

There was no appearance of the applicant. Accordingly no supmissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS book deals with the historical, social, and personal aspects of the subject. The cover picture and blurb give a false impression of sensationalism. It is a popular but serious study, written responsibly and without undue or salacious dwelling on the details of case histories.

The Tribunal classifies this book as not indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 592

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the magazine Modern Sunbathing published by Seven Seas Publishing Pty. Ltd.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the publisher’s representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THERE are some characteristics of this magazine which do not usually belong to a nudist magazine: almost all the photographs are of young women; some are decorated, some posed provocatively. But there is no distortion, no appeal to prurience, no perversion or crudity. The articles are slight but harmless.

The Tribunal classifies this book as not indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 593

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Hutchinson Publishing Group Ltd. for a decision in respect of the book A Pictorial Guide to Sexual Fulfilment by Dr Robert Chartham, published by David Bruce and Watson Ltd., London.

There was no appearance of the applicant and accordingly no submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS is yet another book in the copious Chartham series. It is large, stiff-covered, gold-on-white, and sealed in polythene. A general introduction is followed by 70 photographs each with detailed comment. The matter is straightforward and Dr Chartham’s careful spelling out of lovemaking could be a help to the unimaginative or the bored. Because of the adult nature of the subject an age restriction seems appropriate.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent in the hands of persons under the age of 18 years.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 594

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book The Photographic Manual of Sexual Intercourse by L. R. O’Conner, published by Pent-R Books Incorporated, New York.

There was no appearance of the applicant. Mr Downey appeared on behalf of the publisher’s representative in New Zealand and made submissions.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS manual is a paperback reprint of an American ready seller and makes the unlikely claim that it is “America’s first complete sex course in one volume”. It is cheap in everything except the price, though poor quality alone is not ground for declaring it indecent. Of more significance is the subject matter and while some of the text is helpfully explanatory much of it is inappropriate in tone and reference; in particular two chapters of detail and photographs on oral-anal sexuality are unnecessarily explicit. The book as a whole appears to lack integrity and honesty of purpose.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

30 November 1972.

No. 595

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book The Art of Sensual Massage by Gordon Inkeles and Murray Todris, published by Straight Arrow Books, San Francisco.

There was no appearance of the applicant. Mr Taylor, the importer, appeared and made submissions.
