Indecent Publications Tribunal Decisions

26 AUGUST

No. 336

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for a decision in respect of the book Make the Love Tree
Grow by Martin O'Neill, published by Ace Books, New York.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
A competent enough novel of its kind this book has a theme
based on racial tension overlaid by a story of incest. It is not
the extreme kind of book to which adults should be denied
access but we are inclined to think that there might be some
danger to adolescents in its recital of antisocial practices.
Though this danger is slight we consider that a restriction is
justified.
The Tribunal classifies the book as indecent in the hands of
persons under 16 years of age.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
20 August 1971.

No. 337

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for a decision in respect of the book Her and She and Him
by Lisa March, published by Audubon Books, New York.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS is an unusual book about a young woman who becomes
involved in a lesbian relationship, a young man who is already
involved in a homosexual relationship with an older man, and
how these two young people fall in love and manage to escape
from their entanglements.
It is told reasonably skilfully and is not in itself likely to
be in any way harmful. There is a certain amount of specific
description of homosexual activity which we are inclined to
think is unsuitable for young people and which would require
appreciable literary or sociological merit to outweigh it.
The Tribunal classifies the book as indecent in the hands of
persons under 18 years of age.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
20 August 1971.

No. 338

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for
a decision in respect of the book The Mini-Skirt and Beyond
by Roger Farley Gray, published by Canova Press Ltd.,
London.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS book seeks to "fulfil its purpose of recording one of the
most permissive aspects of the sexy sixties" by "taking you on
a sneaky inspection of lovely young women", playing the
voyeur from every angle. The book's 140 pages contain photographs and an occasional minimal comment.
The tone of the book degenerates as it goes on and the
photographs become increasingly salacious, ugly, and obscenely
posed. The book obviously caters for prurient tastes.
The Tribunal classifies the book as indecent.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
20 August 1971.

No. 339

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for a decision in respect of the book The Pictorial Guide to
Sexual Intercourse by I. Schwenda and T. Leuchner, published
by Pent R. Books, New York.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THE text of this book is translated from the German of Istvan
Schwenda and Thomas Leuchner with a sensible foreword by
L. R. O'Conner. The main part of the book consists of some
100 colour photographs of a young man and woman in the
various positions of sexual intercourse.
The subject is legitimate and the pictorial method justifiable,
but with such books—and the Tribunal has now considered
five—there are considerable differences in quality and tone.
What the Tribunal has already said in decision No. 200 on
Sexual Techniques by Morgens Toft applies in the case of the
book now before us. These photographs have restraint, beauty
and charm; the dignity of the format is marred only by the
hyperboles of the publisher on the cover; nor does this book
display any of those features (crude colour, exaggerated poses,
pertness of tone, the wearing of garments) which led the
Tribunal to reject Making Love in Living Colour and Love
Positions (see decisions No. 222 and 223).
Although the price of $15 (possibly more in New Zealand)
should be high enough to prevent children from buying this
book, to be consistent the Tribunal keeps to the wording of
decision No. 200.
The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent in the hands of
persons under 16 years of age unless such persons are being
instructed by parents or professional advisers.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
20 August 1971.

No. 340

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for a decision in respect of the book Madame O by T. Horoku,
published by Audubon Books, New York.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS novel tells of the double life of a Japanese woman doctor
—by day running her gynaecological clinic, at night a prowling
prostitute, revenging herself for the rape she had suffered
as a young girl by injecting her clients with syphilis.
This unlikely tale is related with much emphasis on sadistic
detail laced with gory and unpleasant medical incidents. It is
redeemed by no conceivable literary or social worth.
The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
20 August 1971.

No. 341

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in
the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs
for a decision in respect of the book Jackboot Girls by Leslie
McManus, published by New English Library, London.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the
publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no
submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THE jackboot girls are the Wolverines, an all-female battalion
of Himmler's SS in war-time Germany.
