NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR DECEMBER 1970
General—Like November, December was warm and predominantly dry. By the end of the month pastures were badly dried up in many areas, causing a drop in dairy production. On the other hand, the settled weather proved favourable for haymaking.
Rainfall—Rainfall was less than three-quarters of the normal value over the greater part of the country. Areas with less than half included northern Northland; and Wellington with southern Manawatu and southern Wairarapa. A considerable area in southern Wairarapa received less than a quarter of the normal; and Mangonui in Northland received less than a tenth.
Rainfall was above normal in Fiordland, Southland, and parts of Otago; the Southland plain being the only area in the country with more than 50 percent above. Rainfall was also somewhat above normal in a number of North Island areas, the largest being Gisborne with Eastern Bay of Plenty.
Persistently low rainfall for November and December was especially marked about Cook Strait, Wellington receiving 2.09 in., Masterton 1.65 in., and Blenheim only 1.17 in. for the 2 months. These totals were all unusually low.
Temperatures—Temperatures were 1–2 degrees above normal, with highest departures in northern districts of the North Island. 1970 has been a particularly warm year in New Zealand.
Sunshine—Sunshine was above normal by 20–60 hours in most northern and western districts of the North Island and also over the southern half of the South Island. Highest departures were recorded in South Canterbury and North Otago.
Eastern districts from Napier to Kaikoura received about 30 hours less than the normal sunshine.
Weather Sequence—For the first 7 days of December, westerly conditions predominated. During the first 2 days, an anticyclone extended from the North Tasman Sea across the North Island and away to the east, while a deep depression was passing to the south, with the associated trough of low pressure crossing New Zealand. Rain was reported on the West Coast and in Southland, Otago, and the Canterbury high country; also in parts of Nelson, Manawatu, Taranaki, and the central North Island. On the following day winds were mainly westerly to south-westerly, with rain persisting on the Southland coast and scattered light showers on the West Coast. On the 4th and 5th, a depression south-west of Tasmania moved south-eastward and later eastward, causing rain to spread again to Southland and also Otago. Gales were reported in many districts. During the next 2 days another depression passed far to the south, while the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country. Rain was reported throughout the South Island, except in North Canterbury and most of Marlborough, but it was light in eastern districts. Manawatu, Taranaki, and the central North Island also reported some rain.
On the 8th, an anticyclone centred to the south-east of Tasmania extended on to New Zealand and during this and the next 4 days it moved slowly on to the South Island. The weather remained settled apart from isolated showers.
On the 13th and 14th, a complex depression over the Tasman Sea moved first on to the South Island, then on to the North Island, bringing general rain. On the following day the depression was centred near Auckland, with an anticyclone to the south-east of the South Island; and rain still affected most of the North Island. During the following 2 days the depression moved away to the east and light southerlies spread over the country. Rain persisted at first in the central North Island and was also reported over a considerable part of the South Island.
On the 18th, an anticyclone was centred to the west of the North Island bringing settled weather. During the next 2 days a small depression crossed the North Island while another moved eastward to the south of the South Island. Rain was fairly general but light. From the 21st to the 23rd an anticyclone extended south-eastward from a centre near Auckland, while pressures were low to the south-west. In the north-westerlies rain was reported at times on the West Coast and on the Southland coast. During the next two days a depression passed far to the south and the associated trough of low pressure brought fairly general rain, light in many places.
During the last 6 days of the month an anticyclone over the Central Tasman Sea moved on to New Zealand and then slowly eastward towards the Chatham Islands. Sunny weather was reported over most of the country during this holiday period. However, pressures were low to the north, and easterlies brought rain to some northern and eastern districts of the North Island. Rain was heaviest on the 28th with the passage of a small depression to the north.
