Publications Tribunal & Standards

characters are composites of real people. It is a story of the Klu Klux Klan and apparently every event that is related actually happened. In the words of a reviewer of this book for the Illustrated London News it is “ugly reading but no uglier than the reality: a chronicle of rape, lynching, and torture”.

It is a tough story but a story that is told well and taken as a whole it is not indecent.

The Tribunal classifies it as not indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Secretary for Justice for a decision in respect of the book The Man of Pleasures Companion by Peter Fryer, published by New English Library, London.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS book is “a nineteenth century anthology of amorous entertainment”. The amorous entertainment consists of a choice collection of passages from books, poems, magazines, and papers of that century.

Unlike other books of this kind which lack any reference to sources, a short bibliography at the back of this book indicates where the author has derived some of his material.

The Tribunal acknowledges that the anthology could be of interest to the student of Victorian society and its literature. There are, however, passages from various publications which combine sex and violence in such a way as to lead the Tribunal to impose a classification.

The Tribunal classifies it as indecent in the hands of persons under the age of 18 years.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

332
Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book Bloody Mama by Robert Thorn, published by New English Library, London.

There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the publisher's representative in New Zealand. Accordingly no submissions were made.

DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL

THIS novel is in the tradition of “Bonnie and Clyde” but the criminal incidents are in greater number and variety and are more extreme in their depravity.

The book may be read as a riot of hilarity and a small proportion of readers would find enormous humour and entertainment in it. On the other hand, most people would see in it a glamorising of just about all the evils in the calendar of human iniquity; it has an insidious persuasiveness that makes its treatment of sex, horror, cruelty, crime, and violence injurious to the public good.

The Tribunal classifies this book as indecent.

R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
30 July 1971.
