the South Island. Rain persisted in Northland, Auckland, and
Gisborne, spreading also to Taranaki. It was also general over the
South Island but light in east coast districts north of Dunedin.
Snow was reported in the Otago high country with the colder
temperatures.

The period from the 14th to the 21st was generally unsettled
over the North Island, with by far the heaviest rains of the month.
A shallow depression just west of Northland moved away slowly
into the Tasman, while yet another trough of low pressure crossed
the South Island, followed closely by an anticyclone. From the
14th to the 16th rain was already fairly general over the North
Island and heavy in some eastern districts. It also affected parts
of the South Island. From the 17th to the 19th the depression
remained stationary just west of Northland, while the trough was
stationary across the country east to west near Auckland. In the
strong easterlies some very heavy rain was reported, especially in
Coromandel and Northland, with serious flooding. The remainder
of the North Island received rain once again on the 19th and 20th
besides most of the South Island, as a north-south trough of low
pressure crossed the North Island. The depression had been drifting
slowly south-westward and on the 21st it crossed the South Island.
This day was still unsettled in many districts but the rain cleared
in Northland and Coromandel.

On the 22nd and 23rd a small depression crossed the North
Island with a north-south trough. Rain affected western districts
of the North Island besides Fiordland and South Westland.

During the last seven days of the month an anticyclone formed
in the New Zealand area and remained almost stationary there
until the 28th, when it moved towards the Chatham Islands, while
still covering the country. This was a period of particularly sunny
and mild weather. However, in Northland showers were reported
on the 24th and 25th and again on the 29th and 30th; spreading on
these latter 2 days to Auckland and Gisborne. Fiordland also
reported a few showers, on the 26th and 27th.
