Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by Murdoch Riley of Wellington, company director, for decision in respect of the book Venus in India by Captain Charles Devereaux, with an introduction by Milton Van Sickle. Published by Holloway House Publishing Co., Los Angeles. Paperback $1.25.
Mr Downey appeared for the publishers and made submissions on 2 October 1970.
DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS novel details the adventures of an army officer posted to India during the latter part of the nineteenth century. It consists of a tiresome recital of sexual intrigue and conquests, written in a style of prurient artificiality and coy gentility. It may have some interest for students of Victorian erotica and adult readers should have access to it. It is not, however, suitable for younger readers, for whom the experiences detailed could be disturbing, such is their emphasis in the narrative and their tone.
The Tribunal classifies it as indecent in the hands of persons under 18 years of age.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book Erotic Fantasies by Drs P. and E. Kronhausen. Published by Grove Press. Hardback price $10U.S.
There was no appearance of the applicant nor of the publishers agent in New Zealand.
DECISION OF THE TRIBUNAL
THIS work is by two well-known practising psychotherapists and is said to be the result of a systematic review of erotic underground literature undertaken as part of their research into the role of fantasy in human sex psychology. As the dust jacket says, the book "consists primarily of excerpts from this literature" and the commentary provided is in places very slight and perfunctory. The dominant impression is not that suggested by the subtitle “A Study of the Sexual Imagination” (which would have required consideration of the finest classics of literature as well) but of a commercially conceived compilation of erotic episodes. These present an extensive repertoire of sexual activities, sometimes in gross and bizarre detail, and this makes it undesirable that the book should be taken up by young readers.
The Tribunal classifies it as indecent in the hands of persons under 18 years of age.
R. S. V. SIMPSON, Chairman.
