to coastal districts, especially in the east. On the 12th a ridge of high
pressure extending from an anticyclone to the north brought fine
weather.

Another trough of low pressure brought rain mainly to western
districts on the 13th but a small wave depression formed on it,
and on the following day rain spread to Nelson and Marlborough,
and also to the greater part of the North Island. On the 15th and
16th, while this trough was still active in the north, another trough
moved over the country from the west, and rain affected most of
the country. Conditions improved on the next day, especially in
the south, but scattered patches of rain persisted, particularly in
the north and east of the North Island. Pressures remained high
to the north and another trough of low pressure affected the country
on the 18th and 19th. In the South Island rain was reported mainly
on the West Coast but in the North Island there was a southerly
change with fairly general rain over the southern half. On the 20th a
ridge of high pressure extended over the country from an anti-
cyclone to the north-west of Northland, bringing fair weather.

On the 21st and 22nd a trough of low pressure became stationary
over Otago, while a depression developed over the North Tasman
Sea. Rain was reported on the West Coast and in parts of Otago
and Southland. The depression moved south-eastward past South-
land, and the trough of low pressure crossed the remainder of the
country on the 2 following days. Rain persisted on the West
Coast and in Southland, extending also to Nelson and Marlborough
besides some western and northern districts of the North Island.
On the 25th and 26th an anti-cyclone covered the country, bringing
fair weather.

The anticyclone was now centred to the east and a depression
over the mid Tasman Sea remained almost stationary during the
27th and 28th. In the moist northerlies rain developed in northern
and some western districts of both Islands. On the 29th a slow
moving trough in the northerlies brought heavier rain to northern
districts, especially Bay of Plenty, with flooding in the Whakatane
river. Rain also spread over the remainder of the North Island.
On the following day a depression was situated east of the South
Island, while another complex depression covered the Tasman Sea.
Rain persisted in the Bay of Plenty, but cleared temporarily in most
other districts. However, with the advance of the complex depres-
sion over the Tasman Sea on the last day of the month rain set in
once again in northern and most western districts of both Islands.
