✨ Weather Report and Bank Returns
1 OCTOBER
THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
Northland (2–5 in.) but more especially in eastern Bay of Plenty
(5–11 in.). Major flooding occurred on the Rangitaiki Plains,
while Whakatane and Opotiki were also affected. Surface flooding
was also reported around Dargaville. For the next 4 days the
depression moved slowly away to the north-east while pressures
were mainly high to the south-east and the south. The easterlies
brought rain east of the ranges in the North Island, spreading at
times to Bay of Plenty and Taupo. Some rain was also reported
on the West Coast and in Southland.
By the 19th a depression was centred midway over the Tasman
Sea with two centres, of which the smaller and more northern one
crossed the North Island near Auckland on the following day.
Rain became general over nearly the whole of the North Island
with some considerable falls in Northland. Scattered rain was
also reported in the South Island, especially Nelson and Westland.
As the main depression moved through Cook Strait on the 21st
rain became general except in Fiordland. An anticyclone to the
south-west of Southland moved eastward and as the depression
also moved in this direction, cold southerlies covered the country
from the 22nd to the 24th. Strong gales buffeted Wellington. The
rain cleared first in the west of the South Island and later in the
remainder of the South Island and in most western and northern
districts of the North Island. On the following day an anticyclone
covered New Zealand and the weather was fair.
As the anticyclone moved away to the east and pressures became
very low to the south of Tasmania, strong northerlies set in, with
rain commencing on the West Coast on the 26th and spreading
over most of the country with the advance of a trough of low
pressure during the 2 following days. Strong northerly gales buffeted
Wellington. By the 29th the trough had become stationary through
Cook Strait, causing excessive rain about and east of Nelson
City with a major flood. However, the rain cleared over most of
the North Island. On the following day the trough moved southward
with excessive rain in the Alps, causing serious flooding in the
Grey and Buller Rivers. Rain continued on the West Coast and
in the Alps, and spread also to Otago and Southland. On the last
day of the month a small depression formed over Westland and
the trough moved northward again, affecting the same parts of the
South Island but also western districts of the North Island from
Wellington to Taranaki, with considerable falls there.
