watu. On the 11th two small local tornadoes were reported at Waitara and New Plymouth respectively. A secondary depression had formed over the Tasman Sea, and as it crossed New Zealand in the vicinity of Cook Strait during the next 3 days rain was fairly general, especially over the North Island. By the 14th the winds had changed to southerly with snow on the South Island high country and the North Island ranges. Another weak trough on the 15th brought rain mainly to western and northern districts of the North Island, but Wairarapa, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill were also affected. During the next 2 days an anticyclone moved from the North Tasman Sea on to Northland and the weather was temporarily settled.

By the 18th the anticyclone was centred to the east of Northland while a deep depression lay far to the south of Tasmania, and the associated trough of low pressure was approaching New Zealand. In the strong north-westerlies rain set in, not only on the West Coast but also in Wellington, North Taranaki, and northern Northland. The trough crossed New Zealand during the 19th and 20th and a depression formed on it close to Southland. With the change to very strong westerlies rain was fairly general except in some eastern coastal districts, and snow was reported in parts of Southland and Otago. Strong gales buffeted parts of the South Island besides Wellington. On the 21st conditions were somewhat more south-westerly and the weather cleared in Marlborough, Canterbury, and most of Otago. The period from the 22nd to the 25th was marked by the prevalence of westerly conditions, with a belt of high pressure extending from New South Wales across Northland and Auckland, while pressures remained low far to the south. Rain affected the West Coast and parts of Southland over the whole of this period; and at first western and central districts of the North Island and parts of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago also reported light rain.

During the 26th and 27th a frontal depression over the North Tasman Sea moved on to Northland, while a deep depression was passing to the south and the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country, with a change to southerly winds. Rain persisted on the West Coast and developed also over the northern half of the North Island, soon spreading to most of the country. Snow was reported on the ranges and some high country of both islands. The depression over Northland moved south-eastward to the north of the Chatham Islands and conditions became more south-westerly. On the 28th rain affected mainly southern and some western districts of the North Island, but also Christchurch with Banks Peninsula, and Dunedin. On the following day a weak trough in the south-westerlies brought rain mainly to the West Coast and Southland but some light falls still persisted in Otago and Canterbury. For the last 2 days of the month an anticyclone was crossing Northland and the weather was fine except in Fiordland.
