30 JULY

southerlies covered the country, with light rain still in many
districts. However, the weather had cleared in Fiordland, besides
Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay. On the following day a depression
was also centred to the north-east. Southerlies persisted with light
rain still over most of the North Island, besides Marlborough
and North Canterbury. On the 20th the anticyclone was centred
west of Northland and the weather was mainly settled.

On the 21st a trough in the south-westerlies brought scattered
showers mainly to the central North Island. A depression soon
passed close to Southland and from the 22nd to the 24th rain
spread over the West Coast and the Southland coast besides
some western and central districts of the North Island. On the
following day a belt of high pressure extended from the central
Tasman Sea, across New Zealand and well to the east, and the
weather was settled except in Fiordland. During the 26th and 27th
a depression to the north moved south-eastward, to be centred off

East Cape. Rain was reported from the easterlies in eastern
Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay. During
the next 2 days a depression over the South Tasman Sea moved on
to the South Island, while the associated trough of low pressure
crossed the country. Rain was scattered at first, later becoming
general but mainly light. On the last day of the month a depression
was centred to the east of the Chatham Islands. A weak ridge of
high pressure covered the country but there was a deep depression
far to the south-west with the usual associated trough to the
west of New Zealand. The rain cleared from the south but some
was still reported, especially in Manawatu and Wairarapa, with
lighter falls over most of the North Island.
