Bankruptcy and Land Notices

passage of an anticyclone from west of Cook Strait across New
Zealand to beyond the Chatham Islands but at that stage still
affecting this country. The West Coast, parts of Otago and South-
land, and some western and central districts of the North Island
received light rain on the 12th and 13th during the passage of a
weak westerly trough. From the 14th to the 17th a depression
was almost stationary north-east of Auckland. In the easterlies
considerable rain was reported in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.
By the 17th another depression was also advancing over the South
Tasman Sea, causing rain to advance from the west on to most
western and northern districts on this and the following day.
On the 19th the depression from the Tasman Sea moved on
to New Zealand, and rain covered the country as far south as
Hokitika and the Kaikouras. By the 20th this depression was
centred near the Chatham Islands, and another depression moved
rapidly across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand, with rain
still covering the whole of the North Island and also most of the
West Coast. Two days of general rain occurred over nearly the
whole country on the 21st and 22nd with the passage of this de-
presion to the south-east and later a change to cold southerly
winds over the South Island. There were many reports of thunder-
storms and hail over the North Island on the 22nd. During the
23rd the weather cleared over the greater part of the South Island.
However, on the following day a depression developed to the east
of Gisborne and cold southerlies set in up till about the 26th with
fairly general rain, clearing first on the West Coast and in the
South Island high country. Snow was reported on parts of the
North Island high country, blocking the Desert Road for some
time. The clearance of weather continued on the 27th but rain was
still reported in Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Taihape, besides a
few showers in Manawatu and on the coast from North Canterbury
to Banks Peninsula.
During the last 4 days of the month the weather was mainly
settled under the influence of an anticyclone moving across the
North Island and to the east.
