CITIZENS, schools, and local authorities throughout New
Zealand are requested to observe Thursday, 9 October 1969, as
Cook National Day to commemorate the two-hundredth anni-
versary of the day Captain James Cook first landed in New
Zealand, at Poverty Bay.
The national celebrations of the bicentenary will be held at
Gisborne on 9 October 1969 in conjunction with local
celebrations to be conducted by local authorities in co-operation
with interested organisations.
Celebrations elsewhere should normally be held on this day,
unless the area is one where the local authority has made
arrangements for observance of the Cook bicentenary on
another date.
There is no intention to declare a public holiday throughout
the country and the day should be observed in a purely
commemorative sense. Except for the national celebrations at
Gisborne, it will be for local authorities, schools, or interested
organisations to decide on some appropriate way of celebrating
the bicentenary.
