From the 15th until the 25th disturbed westerly conditions prevailed over the whole country. During this period seven troughs of low pressure passed over New Zealand. Those on the 15th, 17th, 18th, 21st, and 23rd each produced over an inch of rain in some western parts of both Islands. Strong to gale north-west winds preceded several of the troughs.

During the 25th a depression developed rapidly to the west of Auckland. It moved south-eastwards to cross the north of the South Island early on the 26th. As its associated cold front moved over the North Island on the morning of the 26th thunderstorms and very strong winds were experienced over a wide area. Hail was reported in some places and there were reports of minor damage throughout the North Island. Heavy rain and gales affected some central and northern South Island areas at the same time.

A ridge of high pressure intensified as it moved towards the country on the 27th and by the 28th an anticyclone was centred over the North Island. Apart from some rain in Fiordland and isolated showers elsewhere, fine weather prevailed on 27th and 28th.

An almost stationary front lying just south of the South Island on the 29th was associated with some heavy rain in the south and west of the South Island but fair weather continued over the North Island and much of Marlborough and Canterbury throughout the 29th. On the 30th this front moved over the country bringing rain mainly in western areas and in north of the the North Island.
