✨ Meteorological Report and Tariff Notices

On the 20th a very deep depression was centred far to the south-west and another trough of low pressure moved on to the country. A depression soon developed on the trough near Cook Strait. At first rain was restricted to the West Coast and the Alps with parts of Central Otago and inland Canterbury. However, during the 22nd and 23rd the weather cleared in the south but deteriorated over the remainder of the country, with some considerable rain in Hawke's Bay. Westerly conditions were once more renewed on the 24th and 25th, with fairly general rain west and north of the main ranges. During the passage of a trough on the 26th, a depression developed on it east of Gisborne, causing a change to cold southerly winds with snow in some districts and fairly general rain, except in the south-west of the South Island. For the next 2 days the cold southerlies continued to bring showers to eastern districts from Dunedin to northern Hawke's Bay and also about Cook Strait. During the last 2 days an anticyclone was centred to the north with a ridge of high pressure extending over the country. However, on the 29th rain was still reported in Marlborough, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, and Bay of Plenty.

trough crossed the country, followed by cold west-south-westerlies with snow in Southland and fairly general rain elsewhere, but only light falls in the east. Some strong gales were reported, especially about Cook Strait. During the next 2 days conditions remained somewhat similar, with further rain in parts of the West Coast, Southland, and the central North Island. On the 13th yet another trough of low pressure moved across the country and a depression developed on it to the south-east of the South Island. Very strong gales were reported, especially in Otago and Canterbury and about Cook Strait. Rain persisted on the West Coast and also affected some western districts of the North Island.

The trough became stationary over the North Island during the 14th to 16th, with another depression forming and moving to the east. Rain continued on the West Coast and spread to Southland once again. It also affected the greater part of the North Island, missing only southernmost districts. Some considerable falls were reported in the Bay of Plenty. The depression moved away to the east and for the next 2 days south-westerlies predominated with the passage of yet one more trough. Some rain or showers were reported in many districts. Better weather prevailed on the 19th under the influence of a weak ridge of high pressure.
