high country of both islands and down to quite low levels in parts
of Southland, Otago, and Canterbury. For the next two days the
weather was mainly fine, under the influence of a ridge of high
pressure. However, Northland, South Westland, Fiordland, and
Southland received rain at times.
During the 15th and 16th fairly general rain was reported with
the passage of a depression to the south, while the associated trough
of low pressure crossed the country. An anticyclone soon moved
on to the South Island, while a depression near Raoul Island
moved slowly southward. For the next 3 days cold south-easterlies
brought rain to Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, and Wellington. However, on the 20th the weather was fine.
By the 21st a complex depression covered the eastern Tasman
Sea, with centres near Norfolk Island and west of Cook Strait.
In the moist northerlies heavy rain set in over Nelson, Westland,
and parts of Marlborough. Rain became general during the next 3
days as the two centres crossed the country. With increasing pressures the weather improved in the south on the 25th and became
generally fine on the following day, when an anticyclone was centred
over the North Island.
The centre of the anticyclone moved to the south-east near the
Chatham Islands. The weather deteriorated in Northland, Fiordland, and South Westland on the 27th with the approach of a
trough of low pressure over the Tasman Sea. On the following day
a depression was centred to the north-east of Auckland, and during
the remaining days of the month it moved past East Cape with
a second centre forming. Easterlies set in again over the North
Island, bringing considerable rain to Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, and
Wairarapa.
