West Coast and the Alps and western Southland and persisted during the 12th and 13th. Some rain also affected the remainder of the South Island apart from the Canterbury plains and coast, the Kaikoura coast and central Marlborough. During the next two days the trough moved on over the North Island, where another depression developed, with general rain there, heavy in places; while the weather cleared in the south. However, on the 16th Fiordland and South Westland were affected by another trough of low pressure. The depression now lay to the east of the North Island, and some rain was still reported from Auckland through Waikato and Bay of Plenty to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.

A welcome spell of settled weather was associated with the passage of an anticyclone over New Zealand and to the south-east past the Chatham Islands from the 17th to the 20th. A shallow depression developed over the Tasman Sea during this period and became almost stationary west of Cook Strait. From the 21st to the 23rd the depression moved away to the northwest while a trough of low pressure originally associated with it moved south-eastward across the country. This trough was accompanied by scattered patches of rain, mainly light.

Issued by: The Director, New Zealand Meteorological Service, P.O. Box 722, Wellington, 5 January 1968.

On the 24th the depression over the north-west Tasman moved towards New Zealand once again, while the trough was stationary over the country. Rain now became fairly general. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day the weather was mainly settled, under the influence of a weak ridge of high pressure. However, some rain was reported in Taranaki and Gisborne. The shallow depression over the North Tasman Sea finally moved slowly across the North Island from the 27th to the 29th. Rain was fairly general over the North Island and at first it also extended as far south as Timaru and Haast. This was a particularly thundery period, and some heavy downpours were reported, especially in some southern and eastern districts of the North Island on the 28th. The depression moved away eastward on the 30th, and the weather cleared in most districts.

On the last day of the year a depression was passing close to Southland. As the associated trough of low pressure approached the South Island, rain was reported on the West Coast and in the Alps, the southern lakes district, the Canterbury high country, and Nelson; with scattered falls also in the North Island high country.
