Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 66—Public Inquiry into Import Duties and Import Licensing Affecting Diamond Tools, Etc.

The Tariff and Development Board has been requested by the Minister of Customs to investigate and report on an application for tariff protection in respect of a range of tools (for hand and for machine use) set or impregnated with diamonds and/or with tungsten carbide particles or shaped inserts.

The tools concerned comprise drilling bits (including coring bits), reamer shells, dressers and truers, saws (circular and other) and segments for mounting on saw blades (circular and other), and scribers for marking glass and other materials.

The Board accordingly proposes to conduct a public inquiry on the question of the appropriate rates of duty on tools (for hand and for machine use), set or impregnated with diamonds or other precious or semi-precious stones (natural, synthetic or reconstructed), or particles or shaped inserts of tungsten carbide or other metallic carbides or with combinations of any of the foregoing, and also on tool-tips and plates, sticks and the like for tool-tips, unmounted, of sintered metal carbides, falling within the several tariff headings listed below:

The inquiry will also include import licensing as affecting such goods.

For the purpose of taking evidence on this subject the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 13 August 1968, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, New Zealand Law Society Building, 26 Waring Taylor Street, Wellington.

Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the “Notes for Guidance of Witnesses”, which have been prepared by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the under-named.

Twelve copies of a typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes, should be lodged with the under-named not later than Wednesday, 31 July 1968. Each statement will need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.

PURSUANT to section 146 of the Land Act 1948, notice is hereby given that the Land Settlement Board, with the approval of the Minister of Lands, has by resolution declared the under-mentioned licence forfeited, and that the land and improvements are thereby reverted to the Crown.
