THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
No. 26

Pressures were high over the New Zealand area from the 15th
to the 26th. The weather was dominated by a large anticyclone;
it was mainly settled and frequently also sunny. Some light rain
was reported in Fiordland and South Westland on the 19th, with
a few showers in North Westland and Buller. Fiordland and South
Westland were affected again on the 22nd and 23rd, together
with parts of Southland; and at the same time light rain was re-
ported on the east coast of Northland and on the islands off
the Hauraki Gulf. On the 25th there was some light rain on the
coast of North Otago and South Canterbury; and this area
together with the North Canterbury coast and coastal Southland
was again affected on the 26th.
The first somewhat more widespread deterioration in the
weather occurred on the 27th. A depression was centred south of
Raoul Island, and in the easterlies rain was reported over a con-
siderable part of Northland and Auckland besides Gisborne
and Hawke’s Bay; while a trough of low pressure affected South-
land. For the next three days this depression moved slowly south-
westward past North Cape, with rain over the greater part of the
North Island, at times extending also to Nelson and Marlborough.
On the last day of the month another depression formed near
North Cape, with excessive rain in that area. At the same time a
trough of low pressure brought considerable rain to the West
Coast and the Alps, also affecting Southland.
