β¨ Weather Report and Banking Notices
Six days of strong westerlies followed. During the 9th and 10th
a depression crossed the North Island and moved to the east of
the South Island; and a cold front moved over the country behind
the depression. Rain was fairly general. The westerly to south-
westerly airstream behind the front continued for two more days,
with rain on the West Coast, in the Alps, and in parts of Southland,
and showers in western districts of the North Island. Somewhat
similar conditions still persisted during the 13th and 14th as a
depression passed close to Campbell Island and the associated
cold front moved on to the South Island. The rain on the West
Coast and in the Alps became much heavier.
The cold front was stationary over the northern half of the
South Island on the 15th and 16th, owing to the formation of a
wave depression on it over the Tasman Sea. Heavy rain persisted
over Westland while many parts of inland Canterbury and North
Otago were blanketed with heavy snow. Coastal Canterbury
also received considerable rain, and lighter falls were reported
over the remainder of the South Island and northern districts
of the North Island. During the 17th and 18th the cold front
crossed most of the North Island and the depression developed
a second centre to the east of Cook Strait. Rain became general,
with heavy falls in some western and northern districts of the
North Island; while some lighter falls of snow were still being
reported in Canterbury. By now the front was losing intensity.
It became stationary again over Northland from the 19th to the
21st, with some further rain over most of the North Island, while
the weather cleared in the south.
From the 22nd to the 24th pressures were high to the north and
very low to the far south; and westerly conditions again prevailed,
with three troughs crossing the country in succession. Rain covered
the South Island except for the Canterbury Plains and coast,
and it extended also to the North Island except for most eastern
districts. Further very heavy falls were reported in the Alps. A
weak ridge of high pressure brought a clearance in some areas
on the 25th, but the rain persisted on the West Coast, and it was
also reported in Bay of Plenty.
On the 26th a deep depression was centred over the South
Tasman Sea, and on the following day it moved just to the south
of Southland. Once again very heavy rain was reported in the
Alps, with fairly heavy falls also on the West Coast and in parts
of Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds. Some rain extended
to remaining areas of the South Island, apart from the Canterbury
Coast and most of Otago and Southland. Somewhat similar
conditions persisted during the 28th with the formation of a small
depression off the Westland coast, but the rain in the Alps was
lighter. During the last two days of the month a trough associated
with this depression crossed the North Island. The rain cleared
over the southern half of the South Island and also over North
Canterbury and most of Marlborough; and it now affected also
districts north of a line from Wanganui to Wairoa, with some
very heavy falls in Bay of Plenty.
