TARIFF AND DEVELOPMENT BOARD NOTICE NO. 52

PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO QUESTION OF ADDING THE GOODS LISTED HEREUNDER TO SCHEDULE A OF NEW ZEALAND - AUSTRALIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

  1. At the request of the Minister of Overseas Trade the Tariff and Development Board proposes to inquire into and report on the question of whether the goods listed in paragraph 2 hereunder should be added to Schedule A of the New Zealand - Australia Free Trade Agreement.

  2. The goods subject to the inquiry and the rates of import duty at present payable thereon are as follows:

  1. In considering this matter the Board will have regard to all relevant provisions of the New Zealand - Australia Free Trade Agreement. It will take full account of the advantages and disadvantages to New Zealand industry concerned and to New Zealand as a whole of including the items in Schedule A.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on this subject the Board will hold a Public Inquiry commencing on Monday, 17 July 1967, at 10.30. am., in the Board Room, First Floor, N.Z. Law Society Building, 26 Waring Taylor Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence will, on notifying the undernamed to that effect, be supplied with a form indicating the nature of the information which should be submitted in support of representations.

  4. Twelve copies of a typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with the form and supported by any additional information, should be lodged with the undernamed not later than Monday, 10 July 1967. Each statement will need to be presented under oath at the Public Inquiry by the person tendering it.

  5. It should be noted that submissions made to the Department of Industries and Commerce will not be regarded as evidence, unless copies are supplied by applicants to the Board as statements of evidence, and presented under oath as required herein.

NOTE—The Board has been advised of representations made by interested parties to the Department of Industries and Commerce objecting to the inclusion in Schedule A of the following goods:

Ex. 44.24 Ice cream spoons.

Ex. 44.27 Standard lamps, table and other lighting fittings, of wood; articles of furniture, of wood, not falling within Chapter 94; caskets, cigarette boxes, trays and fruit bowls, of wood.

Ex. 44.28 Ice cream sticks.

Interdental tooth space cleaners (tooth picks).

One party has objected to the inclusion of the item “other articles of wood” (Ex. 44.28), on the grounds of lack of definition of goods covered by that item.

Another party has supported the inclusion in the Schedule of Beekeepers’ woodware, including beehives and frames therefor and components for use in the assembly thereof (Ex. 44.28).
