of rain were reported on the West Coast. On the 20th, rain also extended to Southland and parts of Otago and to some western districts of the North Island. On the 22nd and 23rd a particularly vigorous trough caused the rain to extend over nearly the whole of the South Island, with some very heavy falls in the Alps, and on the following day most of the North Island was affected, while the weather cleared in eastern districts of the South Island.

On the 25th a depression developed off western Southland behind a trough of low pressure. There were some further very heavy falls of rain in the Alps and bad weather once against covered nearly the whole of the South Island. Gales were reported in Cook Strait. On the following day the depression crossed the South Island and rain became general

with a change to southerlies in some areas as another depression formed near East Cape. On the 27th a ridge of high pressure brought a brief clearance in the South Island except for North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.

The depression moved away to the south-east, while pressures remained high over south-eastern Australia and the western and northern Tasman Sea. For the last three days of the month winds were westerly to south-westerly. Rain again afflicted the West Coast and Southland. North Taranaki, Auckland, and Northland also reported unsettled weather, and showers extended at times to some other areas, mainly in the North Island.
