The “normal” refers to the present site of the instruments. The standard periods for normals are: for temperature 1931–60, for rainfall 1921–50, and for sunshine 1935–60. No normals are available for stations with only short records.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JUNE 1965

General: June will be remembered mainly for the very cold spell at the end of the month, with snow to low levels in many parts of the country. Apart from this, however, in most districts farmers found it quite a satisfactory winter month for stock. The exception was Southland, together with South Otago. Here the rainfall was excessive and the ground was much too wet.

Rainfall: Over the greater part of the country rainfall was fairly close to average. However, in Southland and in the Wellington district it was 30 to 100 per cent above average. On the other hand, on the Canterbury Plains and over most of Hawke’s Bay it was only three-quarters of the normal value.

Flooding was reported in parts of the Southland Plain following falls for the 22nd and 23rd combined of up to 3½ in. At about the same time flooding also occurred around Opotiki following falls of over 4 in. on the 23rd and up to 7 in. for three days (22–24).

Temperatures: In the South Island temperatures were mainly 1–2 degrees above average. In the North Island they were average or a little below.

The last four to five days of the month were by far the coldest, with southerly winds and snow to low levels in many areas from the 26th to the 28th. Some districts in Nelson, Wairarapa, southern Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, and South Taranaki received their first snow for many years. Snow also fell to low levels in parts of Southland, Otago, and Canterbury on the 12th and 13th; and in Southland on the 24th.

Sunshine: The Auckland Province and parts of Marlborough were favoured with 10–25 hours of sunshine above average. Elsewhere sunshine was somewhat below average. Deficiencies of 15–25 hours were recorded in Wairarapa, South Canterbury, and parts of the West Coast.

Weather Sequence: As in the last few days of May, pressures remained low over the country on 1 June, and a depression crossed the North Island. Rain was general except in Otago, Southland, and Fiordland. As the depression moved away to the east on the next day the weather cleared over most of the South Island; and by the 3rd only Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne were having showery weather.

The period from the 4th to the 21st was one of mainly westerly to south-westerly weather, with pressures frequently low to the south and south-east. There were five days of generally settled weather with anticyclones over the country, namely, the 4th, the 15th to the 17th, and the 21st. On the remaining days a series of five troughs of low pressure affected especially Southland and the West Coast but also other districts, particularly Taranaki. However, in many eastern areas the whole period was one of comparatively settled weather. Gales buffeted Southland and Hawke’s Bay on the 8th. Snow was reported in parts of Otago and inland Canterbury on the 12th and 13th.

During the 22nd and 23rd a complex depression moved on to the country from the west, and a cold front reached Southland. Rain soon became general, with some heavy falls in the Auckland Province, in the Alps, and in Southland. Flooding was reported around Opotiki; and in Southland serious flooding was followed by several inches of snow. As the depression moved away to the east on the 24th winds turned to southerlies with further general rain; but by the 25th the weather had cleared temporarily over most of the South Island, with rising pressures.

During the 26th and 27th another cold front moved northward over the country with fairly general rain and snow to low levels in many areas, including parts of Nelson, Wairarapa, the Wanganui back country, and the Stratford and Dannevirke districts. In the southerlies the weather soon cleared on the West Coast and in Taranaki. With rising pressures, by the 29th a clearance had also occurred over most remaining South Island districts. However, pressures remained low to the east and north, and very cold showery weather persisted well into July in parts of the North Island, especially Wellington and Gisborne.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand

PURSUANT to section 33 of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 1964, the Reserve Bank, acting with the approval of the Minister of Finance, hereby gives notice that as at the close of business on 16 July 1965, and until further notice, balances to be maintained in the Reserve Bank by each trading bank shall be equal to an amount which, when added to that bank’s holdings of Reserve Bank notes as disclosed in that bank’s latest available weekly return of Banking Statistics under the Statistics Act 1955, will be not less than the aggregate of:

20 per cent of that bank’s demand deposits in New Zealand plus 3 per cent of that bank’s time deposits in New Zealand (excluding wool retention deposits) as shown in the last preceding monthly return furnished by that bank in accordance with section 31 of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 1964.

The balances to be maintained as aforesaid shall be exclusive of any balance held by a trading bank in its wool retention or special fund account at the Reserve Bank.
