Note—An asterisk beside the difference from normal indicates that the figures are based on provisional normals. Rainfall normals refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain-gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.
NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR NOVEMBER 1964
General: November was cloudier than usual. Good rains brought some relief to Canterbury and Otago, which had been suffering from very dry conditions. In the North Island the weather was drier than in the previous month, and in some districts farmers were glad to see the ground drying up a little. However, in Hawke's Bay and parts of Northland conditions were too dry. Lack of sunshine and persistent wind were two factors complained of in many districts as retarding pasture growth.
Gales caused some damage about Foveaux Strait on the 16th and in Taranaki on the 21st.
Rainfall: Rainfall was below average over practically the whole of the North Island, mainly by about 30 per cent. In Manawatu and southern Northland it was less than half the average value.
In the South Island rainfall was mainly about 50 per cent above average. However, it was somewhat below normal in North Otago and North Canterbury.
Temperature: Temperatures were mainly close to average.
A cold spell on the 11th brought snow to low levels in inland Southland.
Some particularly warm weather was experienced in eastern districts on the 27th and 28th. In parts of Hawke’s Bay temperatures of over 90°F were recorded.
Sunshine: Sunshine was below average over most of the North Island and the whole of the South Island. The deficiency exceeded 30 hours in most coastal and some inland districts of Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, also on parts of the West Coast, and in western districts from Manawatu to North Taranaki.
The only area favoured with sunshine appreciably above average was northern Northland, with a surplus of upwards of 20 hours.
Weather Sequence: During the first three days a depression crossed the Auckland Province, and pressures were also low over the South Island. Rain was reported in all North Island districts except Taranaki, and also in Marlborough and Canterbury and parts of North Otago. The passage of a depression across the South Island during the 4th and 5th brought general rain. A brief spell of westerly to south-westerly weather on the 6th was associated with improved conditions over most of the North Island, but showers persisted in the south.
During the next three days a complex depression crossed the country, with rain in most districts; it was particularly welcome in Canterbury and Otago. A weak ridge of high pressure on the 10th brought fair weather; but on the following day a trough of low pressure once more caused fairly general rain. A weaker trough on the 12th and 13th affected only a few districts, especially parts of Canterbury, Marlborough, Gisborne, and Bay of Plenty.
The period from the 14th to the 20th was one of typical westerly weather, with an anticyclone to the north and depressions passing to the south. Rain was reported frequently on the West Coast and the Southland coast: at times it extended also to parts of Otago, Taranaki, and Waitomo. Strong gales were reported on the 16th in and about Foveaux Strait.
A fairly deep depression passed through Cook Strait during the 21st and 22nd. Rain was general, except in eastern districts from Wairarapa to Gisborne. Some considerable falls were reported in and about the Alps and also in Nelson. Strong gales buffeted Taranaki, causing serious interruptions to the power supply. An anticyclone brought better weather on the following day.
The period from the 24th to the 29th was another one of westerly weather, rather similar to that from the 14th to the 20th. Some considerable falls of rain were reported in Southland on the 26th with the passage of a depression just to the south. High temperatures were recorded in eastern districts, especially Hawke’s Bay, on the 27th and 28th.
The last day of the month was dominated by south-westerlies, with showers in some districts, especially in the southern half of the North Island.
