NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR DECEMBER 1963

General: December was a dry, windy month over the greater part of the country. In Northland it was the third successive month of dry weather and in many areas pasture growth was poor, with declining dairy production. Conditions were also very dry in Nelson and Marlborough.

Some sheep were lost in Canterbury due to heavy rain with cold temperatures on the 20th.

Rainfall: Over the greater part of the country rainfall was less than three-quarters of the average value. The greatest deficits were recorded in Marlborough and Nelson.

By contrast, on the East Coast rainfall was two to five times the average value. It was also somewhat above average in Bay of Plenty and eastern Waikato, Northern and Central Hawke’s Bay; and on Banks Peninsula and the North Canterbury coast. On Banks Peninsula and about Christchurch some exceptionally heavy falls were reported on the 20th — over 6 in. at Lyttelton, and 14 in. at Pigeon Bay. Flooding occurred in some of these areas.

Temperatures: Temperatures were more than 2 degrees below average in South Otago and Southland, and also in some inland parts of North Canterbury and Marlborough. Elsewhere they were mainly a degree cooler than average, except over most of the Auckland Province, where they were close to normal.

Sunshine: Sunshine was above average in eastern and northern districts of the South Island and also in North Taranaki, mainly by 20–40 hours. New Plymouth and Nelson were particularly favoured, with a surplus of more than 50 hours. By contrast, Gisborne and parts of Hawke’s Bay had 30–40 hours below normal; and most of Southland had 20–25 hours below normal.

Weather Sequence: A small depression which had been over Northland at the end of November persisted there initially in December. During the first two days a trough of low pressure crossed the country, followed later by a southerly change with cooler temperatures. Rain was reported in most districts.

A spell of settled weather followed from the 3rd to the 6th as a belt of high pressure moved across New Zealand; but Fiordland and Bay of Plenty received some rain at first. For most of the country the settled weather persisted for another five days. However, a depression to the north caused rain in Northland and eastern districts of the North Island as it moved down the east coast; while a trough to the south caused rain at times in Fiordland on the Southland coast, and in parts of Canterbury and Otago.

A trough which crossed the South Island on the 12th and 13th was accompanied by rain, except inland and in Marlborough and Nelson. During the next three days the trough was almost stationary over the North Island, with some rain in most districts. There were considerable falls in Bay of Plenty.

During the 17th and 18th another trough of low pressure moved rapidly over the South Island to become stationary over the North Island, and a depression developed on it and moved on to Northland. Many districts received some rain. However, the rain became more general during the 19th and 20th with a deep depression to the east and a cold front crossing the country. Very heavy rain fell around Christchurch, and there were considerable falls also in Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Northland.

For the next four days pressures remained low to the east, with south-westerly winds over New Zealand. Showers were reported in some districts, mainly light. A ridge of high pressure brought mainly fair weather on Christmas Day.

For the last six days of the month westerly conditions predominated, with pressures very low to the south and high to the north. The West Coast and Taranaki received considerable rain, and many other districts reported some rain. However, the weather was mainly fair on the 27th and 28th, under the influence of an anticyclone over the North Tasman Sea.
