NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JANUARY 1963

General: January was a dry month, and also very warm in the
South Island. For about the last three weeks of the month many
parts of the North Island received no rain at all. Drying winds were
also comparatively frequent, and by the end of the month pastures
in many parts of both Islands were showing the effects of the dry
spell. In parts of the Auckland Province dairy production was
falling off.

Rainfall: Over the greater part of the country rainfall was less
than three-quarters of the average value. In most of Marlborough
Sounds and parts of eastern Northland and Coromandel it was
less than a quarter.

Rainfall was above average by about 40 to 70 per cent in most
of Hawke's Bay, on the Southland Plains, and in parts of Wellington
and southern Wairarapa.

In the North Island nearly all the month's total fell from about
the 8th to the 10th, and this heavy rain caused slips and washouts
in the King Country, with serious dislocation of rail traffic.

Temperatures: Temperatures were above average by 2 to 4 degrees
in the South Island and by 1 degree in the North Island.

There was a cool spell from about the 9th to the 12th, with snow
on Egmont and Ruapehu. Southland also experienced unusually
cool temperatures on the 25th, with snow well down on the mountains.

Sunshine: From Hamilton and Gisborne to South Canterbury
and South Westland sunshine was mainly 20-30 hours above
average, except in Taranaki and Buller. In far northern and far
southern districts it was 15-40 hours below average.

Weather Sequence: The fine spell which had commenced towards
the end of December 1962 continued for the first five days of January
over most of New Zealand as an anticyclone moved slowly across the country. However, on the 1st and 2nd the passage of a
depression and trough to the south caused rain in Fiordland,
south Westland, and coastal Southland; and by the 5th freshening
northerlies were bringing rain again to the West Coast.

The period from the 6th to the 11th was one of unsettled weather
over the greater part of the country. A depression from the Tasman
Sea passed close to Southland and the associated trough of low
pressure moved slowly eastward over New Zealand, with rain
spreading northward and eastward. The rain became heavy from
the 8th to the 10th over parts of the North Island with the formation
of a small depression there. Slips and washouts in the King Country
caused serious dislocation of rail traffic. Winds turned to the south,
with cooler temperatures and a clearance on the West Coast and
in Southland and most of Otago. As the depression moved away
on the 11th the weather also improved in northern and western
districts of the North Island and in Canterbury. In many parts of
the North Island there was no rain for the remaining 20 days of
the month.

A spell of settled weather followed from the 12th to the 19th as
an anticyclone moved across the country. However, freshening
easterlies associated with the passage of a depression to the north
during the 15th and 16th caused some showers in Gisborne and
Coromandel.

Mainly settled weather persisted over the North Island from the
20th to the end of the month under the influence of anticyclones.
In the South Island the weather was rather variable and in western
and southern areas frequently unsettled as depressions passed to
the south. Some light rain spread to parts of Wellington and Wairarapa on the 21st and to North Taranaki and Waitomo on the
23rd and 24th. The 25th was marked by unusually cool temperatures
in Southland, with snow well down on the mountains.
