NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR OCTOBER 1962

General: October was warm, cloudy, and unsettled. The absence of cold spells was particularly welcome in the South Island. Generally it was a favourable month for pasture growth and for stock. However, in parts of the Auckland Province and Nelson the ground was much too wet.

In the early morning of the 8th exceptionally strong westerly winds caused damage over a wide area in the Auckland Province. On the Hauraki Plains the wind reached hurricane force, damaging many houses and uprooting trees.

Rainfall: Rainfall was well above average in northern and western districts of both islands (except for South Westland and Fiordland), and also in Central Otago. Highest percentage departures were recorded in Nelson, Bay of Plenty, and Northland, where many stations received more than twice the normal amount.

East of the main ranges rainfall was mainly about three-quarters of the average value, but in North Canterbury it was only half.

The total for ten months of the year was already exceptionally high in Nelson and Rotorua. Nelson had received 54·28 in., not far short of the record yearly total of 55·45 in. (1892); while Rotorua had received 83·03 in., far higher than any yearly total except the 93·72 in. recorded in 1893.

Temperatures: Temperatures were warmer than average over the whole country. Departures were mainly 3 to 4 degrees, except over the southern half of the South Island and the Bay of Plenty, where they were 2 to 3 degrees.

The period from the 22nd to the 24th was exceptionally warm for October, particularly in the Wellington Province. On the 23rd a number of stations had their highest temperature for October in more than 20 years of record, notably Masterton (78) and Wellington (77).

Sunshine: Sunshine was below average, except east of the main ranges, where it was mainly close to average. The deficit exceeded 30 hours in Bay of Plenty, from Taranaki to Manawatu, and from Nelson to Westland. Nelson with 146 hours and Westport with 110 hours had their cloudiest October in over 25 years of record.

Southland and coastal Otago were the only areas favoured with appreciably more sunshine than normal, by about 20 hours.

Weather Sequence: During the first two days of the month a depression moved southward from the north Tasman Sea across the South Island. The weather became generally unsettled, but the rain was light east of the main ranges. There was a temporary improvement over the North Island on the 3rd as a second depression approached the South Island. However, rain became general again during the next two days as this depression crossed Otago and Southland and the associated trough of low pressure passed over the North Island. A temporary improvement occurred once again on the 6th, except in the Auckland Province and on the West Coast. During the next two days the passage of two further troughs of low pressure, this time associated with a deep depression near Campbell Island, caused fairly general rain west of the main ranges. In the early hours of the 8th some exceptionally strong westerly winds buffeted the Auckland Province, especially the Hauraki Plains.

A weak ridge of high pressure brought mainly fair weather on the 9th. The weather deteriorated once again over the North Island (excluding most of the Wellington Province) with the passage of a small depression during the next two days. Some light rain was also reported in coastal districts of the South Island. Mainly fair weather prevailed during the 12th and 13th, with an anticyclone over the North Island. On the following day the approach of a depression caused some rain in western districts, about Cook Strait, and on the Southland coast; and rain became general as this depression crossed the country on the 15th. There was a clearance for a day except over the Auckland Province, but during the 17th and 18th further general rain occurred with the passage of a small depression. Yet another small depression crossed the South Island during the next two days, with rain in Westland and Canterbury and some light falls also in Manawatu and Taranaki.

On the 21st a ridge of high pressure extended over the country from an anticyclone centred to the east, and a depression over the north Tasman Sea commenced to move slowly towards the North Island. The weather was fair at first except for some light rain in Northland, but during the 22nd to the 24th rain from the moist northerlies extended gradually southward and eastward over the whole country except for eastern districts from Kaikoura to Invercargill. Temperatures were unusually warm. By this time a small centre had passed close to Northland. Another centre crossed the North Island from the 25th to the 27th, with rain from Hokitika and Christchurch northward.

The weather improved over the North Island with rising pressures, but on the 28th and 29th a slow-moving trough associated with a depression over the central Tasman Sea brought rain over the South Island as far north as Buller and North Canterbury. On the following day the trough became weak, but rain persisted over Buller and most of Canterbury. In the meantime the depression itself had been moving slowly north-eastward and by the end of the month it was centred west of the North Island, with a belt of rain extending on to Northland and Taranaki and the northern half of the South Island.
