NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER 1962

General: September was fairly typical, but in many districts it was a little warmer, drier, and more sunny than usual. The first half of the month was rather cloudy and unsettled; and cold rains caused some losses of lambs, especially in Manawatu. Apart from this it was a good month for stock. Pasture growth was satisfactory in most districts, but it was slow in coming away in Bay of Plenty, on account of the wet conditions there.

On the 5th a number of thunderstorms were reported in the Taranaki-Wanganui area, and during one of these a small tornado caused some damage at the New Plymouth showgrounds. On the 9th thunderstorms were reported in widely separated areas. In Egmont Village (Taranaki) lightning set fire to a tree and killed seven sheep; while a hailstorm and small tornado caused damage at Temuka. Yet a third small tornado was reported at Port Ohiwa (east of Whakatane) on the 14th.

Rainfall: Rainfall was about two-thirds of the average value in eastern and inland districts of the South Island, also in the southern part of the Wellington Province, in Taranaki, and in northern Northland. Elsewhere rainfall was mainly close to normal. However, it was more than 50 per cent above average in parts of Bay of Plenty and Gisborne, and about Nelson city.

Temperatures: It was the twelfth month in succession with temperatures above the long-period average. Departures were mainly only a degree or even less.

Snow was reported on the high country of both islands and down to low levels in Southland on the 1st and 2nd. The North Island high country also received quite a heavy fall on the 9th.

Sunshine: Sunshine was mainly about normal or 10 to 25 hours above. However, eastern districts of the North Island from Wairarapa to Gisborne received 30 hours less sunshine than average.

Weather Sequence: On the 1st a trough of low pressure was crossing the North Island, and a depression developed on it near Gisborne. Rain was fairly general, but most of Marlborough, Westland, and Otago escaped. Snow was reported on the high country of the North Island and down to low levels in Southland. As the trough and depression moved away during the next two days the weather improved in many districts, especially in the North Island. However, a trough affected Southland and later caused considerable rain on the West Coast.

The 4th, 5th, and 6th were days of particularly unsettled weather for nearly the whole country, caused by the passage of a series of troughs, one of which was associated with a very deep depression just to the south of Southland. A number of thunderstorms were reported in the Taranaki-Wanganui area on the 5th. Rather unsettled westerly weather continued during the 7th, 8th, and 9th as further troughs of low pressure crossed New Zealand. However, Canterbury and Otago received no rain on the 7th and 8th, and the weather cleared in South Westland on the 9th with the change to southwesterly winds. The 9th was also a day of thunderstorms in widely separated districts, and considerable snow was reported on the high country of the North Island.

From the 10th to the 12th an anticyclone passed eastward close to Northland and the weather was for the most part settled. However, Fiordland received considerable rain on the 12th with the approach of a trough of low pressure. This trough crossed the country during the next two days, with rain at first in western and northern districts, later mainly in eastern districts as the winds turned to southerlies.

From the 15th to the 21st was a period of mainly fair or fine weather under the influence of an anticyclone crossing the country. However, parts of the east coast from Cape Palliser to East Cape reported showers from the 15th to the 18th; and a weak trough of low pressure caused some rain in western and southern districts of the South Island on the 20th. The far north also received some rain on the 21st.

During the 22nd and 23rd a depression passed close to North Cape, with some rain over most of the North Island. A trough also affected the far south-west. As the depression moved away past East Cape, at first the weather improved over the North Island on the 25th, with only a few showers near the east coast; however, light rain was also reported in Marlborough. By the 26th the weather had cleared over the South Island, but rain had spread westwards in the North Island over Bay of Plenty and Taupo.

From the 26th to the 28th pressures were low over and to the west of New Zealand, with shallow centres passing to the north and south. Light rain affected most of the South Island and the Auckland Province. During the last two days of the month the situation remained rather similar, with a shallow complex depression covering the Tasman Sea and extending on to New Zealand. Rain continued over Northland and Bay of Plenty and extended also to Taranaki and Wellington. In the South Island only Nelson and the West Coast were affected.

Special Order Made by Chatham Islands County Council
Altering Riding Boundaries

PURSUANT to section 88 of the Counties Act 1956, the Secretary for Internal Affairs hereby publishes the following special order made by the Chatham Islands County Council.

SPECIAL ORDER

PURSUANT to and in exercise of the powers vested in it by section 23 of the Counties Act 1956, the Chatham Islands County Council resolves by way of special order as follows:

“That the following areas of land described hereunder be excluded from the Eastern Riding and incorporated in the Northern Riding of the County of Chatham Islands, viz.:

“(1) An area of 3,650 acres, more or less, described as Section 4, Owenga Farm Settlement, part Te Awapatiki 1B—Occupier, S. W. Hough. Valuation Ref. 2539/29.

“(2) Also an area of 500 acres, more or less, described as part Te Awapatiki 1B—Occupier, Barker Brothers. Valuation Ref. 2539/30.”

There shall be no alteration in the Councillor representation in regard to these two ridings as a result of the proposed alteration in boundaries. The alteration in boundaries hereby made shall take effect on and after the 4th day of September 1962.

SCHEDULE

NORTHERN RIDING

ALL that area in the Wellington Land District, Chatham Islands County, bounded by a line commencing at Point Alison in Block IV, Tawirikoko Survey District, and proceeding generally easterly along the sea coast to Point Munning in Block III, Rekohu Survey District; thence generally south-westerly along the sea coast to the northern side of the entrance channel of Te Whanga Lagoon; thence generally northerly along the shore of that channel and the shore of Te Whanga Lagoon to its intersection with a right line between the westernmost corner of part Wharekauri I as shown on D.P. B/19 in Block VII, Rekohu Survey District, and the north-eastern corner of Kekerione 1E in Block XI, Te Whanga Survey District; thence westerly along that right line, to and along the northern boundary of Kekerione 1E, crossing public roads, to the sea coast; thence north-westerly and generally westerly and northerly along the sea coast to the point of commencement.

EASTERN RIDING

All that area in the Wellington Land District, Chatham Islands County, bounded by a line commencing at the confluence of the Nairn (Mangatukarewa) River with the Mangape Stream in Block II, Oropuke Survey District, and proceeding generally north-easterly up the middle of that stream to its outflow from Lake Huro, along a right line to the north-western corner Te Matarae 2A, along the northern boundary of that subdivision, crossing a public road, to the western shore of Te Whanga Lagoon; thence generally north-easterly and north-westerly along that shore to the north-eastern corner of Kekerione 1E in Block XI, Te Whanga Survey District; thence easterly along a right line between that corner and the westernmost corner of part Wharekauri 1 as shown on D.P. B/19 to its intersection with the eastern shore of Te Whanga Lagoon in Block VII, Rekohu Survey District; thence southerly along that shore and the shore of the entrance channel, to and along the sea coast to Cape Fournier in Block IV, Rangimene Survey District; thence generally westerly along the sea coast to the easternmost corner of Otonga 1E 14 in Block XV, Oropuke Survey District; thence generally north-westerly along the north-eastern and eastern boundaries of the Otonga Block, to and northerly down the middle of the Nairn River, aforesaid, to the point of commencement, together with Pitt and other outlying islands.
