NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR AUGUST 1962

General: August was a mild month. Winter temperatures
generally have been the mildest for about 40 or 50 years, and this
has been especially appreciated in the South Island where pasture
growth has commenced early and stock have wintered well. In
parts of the North Island the ground has become too wet. Lambing
commenced in most districts under favourable weather conditions.

Small local tornadoes caused damage in New Plymouth and
Whakatane on the 3rd. A tornado was also reported at Te Mata,
near Raglan, on the 29th.

Rainfall: Rainfall was about two-thirds of the average value in
eastern districts from Central Hawke's Bay to Canterbury and also
in parts of Southland and Westland. On the other hand, it was
double the average in Central Otago, and 50 per cent above in
an area extending from south of Opotiki to Wairoa and Gisborne.
Elsewhere it was mainly close to normal.

Temperatures: Temperatures were above average by 1 to 2
degrees in the North Island and by a degree in the South Island.

Snow was reported on the high country of both islands and
to fairly low levels in the South Island on the 5th and from about
the 11th to the 14th.

Sunshine: Sunshine was mainly close to the average value.
However, Canterbury was favoured with about 25 hours above
normal, while Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa, and the Southern Lakes
District were below normal by a similar amount.

Weather Sequence: On the 1st a complex area of low pressure
lay to the west and south-west of the South Island, and rain
affected many districts. However, eastern districts and most of
the Auckland Province escaped. During the next three days a
complex depression developed over the north Tasman Sea and
crossed the country. Rain was general, with some heavy falls on
the 2nd in northern and western districts. Two tornadoes were
reported on the 3rd, in New Plymouth and Whakatane. On the
5th a depression developed to the north-east of Auckland and
cold southerlies freshened, with rain in most districts from Christ-
church northward; snow was reported on the hills in parts of
the South Island and on the high country in the North Island.
For the next three days the weather was mainly fine during the
passage of an anticyclone across New Zealand and to the east.
However, the depression to the north-east of Auckland caused
rain there and in Northland, Gisborne, and Hawke's Bay on the
6th, and this still persisted in the last two districts on the 7th. By
the 8th the weather had not yet cleared in the Gisborne district
and rain was commencing again in Southland.

The weather deteriorated in western and southern districts
on the 9th, with a depression over the north Tasman Sea and
a trough over the South Island. Rain became general on the
following day with the passage of the depression close to Northland
and the trough crossing the North Island. A spell of six days
of settled weather commenced for many districts on the 11th as
an anticyclone south-east of Tasmania spread a ridge of high
pressure over the country; later the anticyclone moved slowly
north-eastward to pass across Northland. However, on the 11th
most eastern districts experienced a cold southerly change with rain,
and snow to low levels in Dunedin and Christchurch. This was
caused by the circulation around the depression still centred
to the north-east of the North Island. The weather cleared rather
slowly in eastern districts, and some rain was also reported on
several days in Southland.

The North Island experienced general rain, mainly light, during
the passage of a depression on the 17th and 18th. Nelson and Marl-
borough were also affected. A weak trough of low pressure which
moved on to the South Island on the 18th caused some rain
in Southland, which spread to parts of Westland on the following
day, while the weather cleared over most of the North Island and
in Nelson and Marlborough. During the 20th and 21st strong
northerly to north-westerly winds predominated as a depression
moved from the South Tasman Sea on to Southland. Rain spread
over the greater part of the country but did not affect southern
and eastern districts from Invercargill to Gisborne. The deteriora-
tion became general with the development over the North Tasman
Sea of a depression, which passed over Cook Strait during the
23rd and 24th. With the change to southerly winds the weather
soon cleared on the West Coast and by the 24th the improvement
extended over most of the South Island. On the following day
there was generally fair weather, under the influence of an anti-
cyclone. A deterioration soon occurred in western and northern
districts on the 26th with the approach of a small depression over
the north Tasman Sea; and on the following day rain spread
to all districts except Hawke's Bay as the depression and an associated
trough crossed the country.

The last four days of the month were marked by westerly
weather, with high pressures to the north and very deep depressions
to the south-west and later south. There was considerable rain
in western districts of both Islands and some rain spread to most
other areas, except near the east coast from Christchurch to East
Cape.
