NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JULY 1962

General: During July the mild weather experienced during the previous two months continued over the whole country making the period May to July this year the warmest since observations began. In most areas stock were in good condition though in Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Otago, and the West Coast the ground became very wet.

Rainfall: Rainfall was below or close to normal over the North Island, except for the Manawatu and East Coast districts where it was two to three times the usual. In parts of the Bay of Islands and western Bay of Plenty only about half the normal rain fell, while in Auckland there were 10 consecutive days without rain in the second half of the month.

In the South Island, except on the Canterbury Plains where totals were about normal, July was wetter than usual. In parts of Central Otago three to four times the normal amount fell.

Temperatures: Temperatures were above average over the whole country the differences in the North Island having their greatest values of two to three degrees in the East Coast, Wellington, and central districts.

In Blenheim, the West Coast, and inland Canterbury temperatures were about 3 degrees above normal. Elsewhere in the South Island the difference was about 1 degree.

Sunshine: North of the Waikato July was sunnier than usual, Auckland receiving a record total of 53 hours more than average. The remainder of the North Island received about the usual amount of sunshine, except in Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa where totals were 20 to 30 hours below normal.

Central Otago and Canterbury received about the usual sunshine, but elsewhere in the South Island it was 20 to 30 hours below normal.

Weather Sequence: The month opened with three days of westerly weather, pressures being high to the north and low to the south; rain affected mainly western districts of both Islands. From the 4th to the 6th a trough moved over the country and a small depression formed over the North Island. Rain was general

and winds turned to the south, with colder temperatures and snow on the high country of both Islands. For the next four days the depression remained east of the North Island, while an anticyclone covered the Tasman Sea and the South Island. The weather cleared in most districts, but rain persisted in Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne. As the anticyclone moved further eastward during the 11th and 12th showers still persisted in Gisborne, and they developed in Northland with the approach of a depression over the north Tasman Sea; elsewhere the weather was fine.

The depression moved towards Southland and its associated trough of low pressure crossed the country during the 13th and 14th with rain, except in eastern districts of the South Island. However, these areas also received some rain during the next two days as a depression developed west of the North Island and winds turned to cold south-easterlies. Rain continued over the North Island, but the weather had cleared on the West Coast by the 16th. As the depression moved away to the east; and as pressures rose the clearance soon extended to most other districts, but rain persisted again in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, and Wairarapa, this time for three more days. A weak trough brought light rain to some districts on the 20th and 21st, but on the following day the weather was generally fair or fine under the influence of an anticyclone over the North Island.

The period from the 23rd to the 27th was one of north-westerly weather, with pressures high to the east of the North Island and low to the south and south-west of Southland. The weather was unsettled on the West Coast and in the Alps, with some heavy rain on the last two days. Rain also extended at times to Taranaki, Manawatu, and Nelson.

On the 28th a depression developed near Egmont and as it moved over the Wellington Province during this and the following day the weather was generally unsettled, with some heavy rain in Nelson and North Taranaki. On the last two days of the month the depression moved away to the east. Rain became lighter, and the weather cleared, first in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, later over the southern half of the South Island.
