NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR FEBRUARY 1962
General: February was for the most part dry and sunny. In parts of western Northland there was a severe shortage of feed for stock and dairy production was being seriously affected, as in January. Elsewhere conditions varied, but in many areas farmers were finding the weather rather too dry. There were a few reports of facial eczema from the Waikato district, both in sheep and cattle.
Rainfall: Rainfall was appreciably below average over the greater part of the country. It was less than half over the northern half of the South Island; and also in central and southern Hawke’s Bay and parts of Gisborne, eastern Bay of Plenty, and the Auckland district. In Marlborough few stations received even a quarter of the normal amount.
Rainfall was mainly close to or somewhat above average over the southern half of the South Island; and also in southern Manawatu, Waitomo, Coromandel, and eastern Northland.
Temperatures: Temperatures were 1 to 2 degrees above average in western and northern districts of both islands, but elsewhere they were close to or slightly below average.
Two comparatively cool spells associated with winds from a southerly quarter occurred from about the 5th to the 7th and the 13th to the 16th. During the first of these spells snow was reported on the ranges in Canterbury down to 3,000 ft.
Sunshine: Sunshine was above average except in most of Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, and parts of Bay of Plenty. Greatest surpluses, exceeding 30 hours, were recorded in western districts of both islands and also in Auckland and Northland.
Weather Sequence: The weather on the 1st was similar to that experienced during the last six days of January, with light rain affecting Northland, Coromandel, and Gisborne, but settled conditions elsewhere. On the following day the weather deteriorated in the west and south of the South Island with the approach of a trough of low pressure from the west. As this trough crossed the country on the 3rd and 4th further rain was reported in the same areas of the South Island and some scattered light falls also extended to the North Island. On the 5th a depression near Campbell Island deepened rapidly, and with the passage of the associated trough parts of Canterbury also received welcome rain. Winds turned to the south-west and temperatures became colder, with snow well down on the ranges in Canterbury. As pressures rose the cool south-westerlies persisted for two more days, with showers mainly in Southland and Northland. The passage of another trough on the 8th and 9th was accompanied by rain over the greater part of the country; the main exceptions being Canterbury, Marlborough, and Bay of Plenty. On the following day a ridge of high pressure brought fair weather.
A depression crossed the South Island during the 11th and 12th, and rain was fairly general; Marlborough, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, and Gisborne were the main exceptions. On the following day winds turned to the south and temperatures became cooler. The weather cleared in western areas, but the southerlies and cooler temperatures persisted until the 16th, with showers in many eastern districts and about Cook Strait.
The period from the 17th to the 22nd was one of generally fair weather, as an anticyclone initially over the south Tasman Sea moved slowly across the country. Temperatures continued cool for February at first but later became warm again.
During the 23rd and 24th a trough brought some rain to the southern half of the South Island. In addition, easterlies in the north caused showery weather in Coromandel and Gisborne. On the following day a ridge of high pressure was associated with mainly fair weather, but showery weather in the easterlies still affected Coromandel, and also Bay of Plenty. On the 26th a trough of low pressure brought rain to western and southern districts of the South Island, and at the same time a depression west of the North Island caused rain in the Auckland Province. The weather soon cleared in the south, but on the following day the rain over the Auckland Province spread to Hawke’s Bay. On the last day of the month an anticyclone centred over the Chatham Islands extended on to New Zealand, with mainly fair weather, but easterlies were still bringing light rain to Northland, Coromandel, and Gisborne.
