NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR OCTOBER 1961
General: Barometers were unusually high over New Zealand during October, and it was an exceptionally warm and dry month. In the Auckland province and in Southland farmers found it a particularly favourable month. Elsewhere the moisture stored in the soil from September's rains was reasonably adequate at first, but by the end of month some good rains were needed.
Rainfall: Rainfall was less than half the average value except in Westland, Southland, coastal Otago, and the greater part of the Auckland Province. In eastern districts from Canterbury to southern Hawke's Bay and also about Cook Strait and in Manawatu it was less than a quarter of the normal value. The driest areas of all were southern Wairarapa, parts of Marlborough near Cape Campbell, parts of inland north Canterbury, and Christchurch with northern Banks Peninsula, where rainfall varied from half an inch to nothing at all. In the first three areas it was the driest October in many years of record.
Parts of Westland and a few areas in Northland, Auckland, and Waikato recorded rainfall above normal. In a comparatively limited area about and south of Auckland city some torrential downpours were reported on the 28th, with local surface flooding; at Pukekohe 7 in. of rain fell in seven and a half hours.
Temperatures and Humidities: Temperatures were above normal over the whole country, the average departure being 3–4 degrees. In eastern and inland districts from Wairarapa to north and central Otago and also in the central North Island departures were 4–6 degrees, and in many of these areas it was the warmest October for about 50 years.
The second half of the month was particularly warm, with temperatures typical of December rather than October.
Some exceptionally low relative humidities were recorded in inland Marlborough on the 22nd. At Jordan, in the Awatere valley, the reading at noon was 6 per cent.
Sunshine: Eastern districts from Gisborne to north Canterbury and the area about Cook Strait were favoured with 40–80 hours more sunshine than average. For Gisborne, Blenheim, and Hanmer it was the sunniest October on record. It was also sunnier than usual, but by a lesser amount, elsewhere in the North Island (except eastern Northland) and in Nelson and central Canterbury.
The only area with a considerable deficiency was the West Coast and the Alps, with 10–40 hours less sunshine than average.
WEATHER SEQUENCE: For the first nine days fine weather prevailed over most of the country, under the influence of a large anticyclone, which remained almost stationary over the North Island. However, the passage of weak troughs associated with depressions to the south caused some rain on the West Coast on the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 9th. A few showers extended at times to parts of Southland; on the 2nd and 3rd some areas of Manawatu, Taranaki, Waikato, and Coromandel were also affected; and on the 8th showers were reported about Auckland city.
From the 10th to the 13th the weather still remained settled over the North Island as the anticyclone moved slowly eastward. However, a weak trough brought light rain to most areas south of Westport and Kaikoura on the 10th, and some showers were reported on the Canterbury coast on the following day. The 12th was generally fine, but on the next day rain fell on the West Coast with the approach of a trough.
The period from the 14th to the 17th was the first period with fairly general rain as this trough moved eastward over the country, followed by another trough, within which a shallow depression developed over the South Island. Rain was mainly light and did not extend to parts of Canterbury, Nelson, and Marlborough.
A second period of mainly settled weather occurred from the 18th to the 25th while another large anticyclone remained almost stationary over New Zealand. The West Coast (particularly Fiordland) was the main exception, with light rain on several days. Parts of Southland also benefited on the 21st and 22nd.
A second period of generally unsettled weather extended over the last six days of the month. The anticyclone had moved far to the east, and a depression covered the Tasman Sea. With freshening northerly winds rain became heavy in Fiordland and western Southland and soon spread to Bay of Plenty. The depression commenced to fill in, but the associated trough of low pressure crossed the country on the 27th and 28th with rain, except in Canterbury. Some exceptionally heavy falls were reported in and just south of Auckland city, causing local surface flooding. Weak troughs continued to affect the country for the next three days, but conditions improved in many districts from the 29th. The Auckland Province, coastal Southland, and the West Coast received further rain; and some light falls were welcomed on the Canterbury Plains.
