NOTE—At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than 10 years, the rainfall record for less than 20 years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR JUNE 1961

General: Although June on the whole was not a particularly cold month, it will be remembered in some parts of the country for an unusually high frequency of snow, with heavy falls in the last few days of the month. In Southland and West Otago farmers were anticipating a serious setback to stock from the snow cover.

Elsewhere conditions varied greatly. It was too wet in parts of the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay Provinces. However, in many districts stock were reported to be wintering well.

A strong south-westerly gale did some damage in northern Northland on the 9th.
