Sunshine: Sunshine was below average in the South Island and
in southern and western districts of the North Island, mainly by
about 20 hours. Parts of Waikato and Bay of Plenty were favoured
with about 20 hours above the normal sunshine.
Weather Sequence: For the first four days an anticyclone was
centred to the south-east of the South Island and a depression
moved from New South Wales across the Tasman Sea. A north-
easterly to northerly airstream covered the country, with rain
at times over most of the North Island and in northern and western
districts of the South Island. The depression crossed the South
Island on the 5th with general rain. Some heavy falls were recorded
in and west of the Alps and in the Nelson Province. During the
next two days this depression moved away to the south-east, while
a small secondary depression formed near East Cape. Rain became
heavier in the Gisborne district and some scattered light falls were
still being reported elsewhere, but the weather cleared over the
greater part of the country.
Pressures remained low to the east but an anticyclone covered
the north Tasman Sea on the 8th and 9th. A trough of low pressure
advanced slowly north-eastward, bringing rain at first to most of
the South Island. A depression developed east of Canterbury and
as the trough advanced further northward from the 10th to the
12th rain spread to southern and western districts of the North
Island. Temperatures became colder and snow was reported on the
ranges. During the next two days the depression moved north-
eastward along the coast with rain mainly between Kaikoura and
Castlepoint and about Cook Strait.
The period from the 15th to the 22nd was one of mainly settled
weather as an anticyclone from the Tasman Sea moved slowly
across the North Island. However, rain was reported at times on
the western and southern coasts of the South Island, especially on
the 17th and 18th and on the 20th and 21st.
A rapid deterioration occurred with the passage of a depression
across the South Island on the 23rd and 24th. Rain was recorded
in many districts and there were some heavy falls in the Alps. The
weather remained fair in most eastern areas from South Canterbury
to Gisborne.
For the last seven days of the month the weather was again
predominantly settled under the influence of an anticyclone which
moved from south of Tasmania across the Tasman Sea and the
North Island. However, on the 25th and 26th cold southerlies were
still bringing rain to the Kaikoura coast and parts of the Cook
Strait area. On the 28th and 29th the passage of a depression far to
the south-east caused light rain on the Southland coast. On the
last day of the month a very deep depression passed to the south,
and considerable rain was reported in and west of the Alps with
light falls also in western Southland.
