influence of a large anticyclone covering the Tasman Sea and New
Zealand. A weak trough which crossed the country during the next
three days brought more rain at first in the far south-west; later
some light falls extended to a few other districts, especially West-
land and parts of the North Island high country. During the 13th
and 14th the anticyclone was centred to the east of the country,
and the approach of a tropical cyclone from the vicinity of Norfolk
Island caused light rain in eastern Northland.
By contrast, the 15th to the 22nd was a period of unsettled and
at times stormy weather, with some very heavy rain. There was a
general deterioration as the tropical cyclone moved on to North-
land and a trough crossed the South Island. The 16th was a
particularly wet and stormy day in Coromandel, Gisborne, and
Hawke’s Bay. During the 17th and 18th the depression lost
intensity and moved south-westward, while another depression
developed to the north-west of Northland. These two days were
not as wet as the previous two, and there was little rain north of
Tauranga or south of Timaru. From the 19th to the 22nd the
depression remained almost stationary to the west of the Auckland
Peninsula and a warm, moist, northerly airstream covered the
North Island. There were many thunderstorms in the North
Island, causing some flooding and disruption of road and rail
transport. At the same time a cold front brought rain at times to
the South Island, especially on the 20th.
Conditions improved during the 23rd and 24th as the depression
moved away to the east, but showers were reported at first in east
coast districts north of Timaru. For the next four days an anti-
cyclone over the Tasman Sea extended on to New Zealand and the
weather was fair or fine, apart from some showers in the Bay of
Plenty on the 27th. On the 29th and 30th the development of a
small depression off the Canterbury coast caused rain except in
some western districts of the Auckland Province. On the last day
of the month a large anticyclone covered the country and the
weather was fine apart from a few showers on the West Coast and
in Taranaki and Northland.
