westerly with the formation of a second centre near Cook Strait.
Minor flooding occurred in some western and northern districts
of the North Island, and snow fell on the North Island ranges.
The period from the 7th to the 16th was one of more or less
settled weather over the greater part of the country. At first the
depression was still centred to the east, and an anticyclone advanced
over the Tasman Sea. South-westerly winds prevailed, and on the
7th and 8th showers affected a number of areas, especially in
Southland, eastern districts of both islands, and Northland. For
the next four days the anticyclone was centred over the South
Island, but showers still persisted in some of these areas. The
anticyclone then moved north-eastward over the North Island,
and on the 14th and 15th the weather was generally fair or fine.
Unsettled weather set in once again for most of the country as
a depression from the north Tasman Sea crossed the South Island
on the 16th and 17th. Winds were north-westerly to westerly, and
Canterbury escaped the rain. Another depression soon moved
south-eastward from the central Tasman Sea, passing to the west
of Campbell Island. The associated trough of low pressure crossed
the country from the 18th to the 20th, with some rain in most
districts; but near the east coast the rain was very light. The for-
mation of a secondary depression over Cook Strait and the passage
of yet another trough across the South Island in the next two days
were associated with rain as far south as Christchurch, except in
Hawke's Bay. A somewhat similar series of events occurred on
the 23rd and 24th as a depression passed to the south and a
secondary centre formed over the North Island in the associated
trough of low pressure. On this occasion rain affected mainly the
Auckland Province and western districts, and some heavy falls
were reported in parts of Coromandel and south-eastern Northland.
With the depression still centred north-east of Auckland, a
vigorous cold front crossed the country on the 25th and 26th,
bringing the coldest weather to date this year. Southerly winds
reached strong gale force in parts of the North Island, uprooting
trees and snapping power poles in north Taranaki. Snow fell to
low levels in the South Island and also covered the high country
of the North Island. Other districts received some rain, but with
rising barometers conditions improved from the west and south
during the next two days.
The passage of yet another trough associated with a depression
to the south brought rain mainly to western districts and the
Auckland Province during the last three days of the month.
