slowly southeastward across the North Island. Strong easterlies brought heavy rain to most of the Auckland and Hawke's Bay Provinces, and the weather was unsettled over the remainder of the North Island. In the south it was mainly coastal districts which suffered, and rainfalls were much lighter.

A change to a more westerly type of situation occurred on the 10th, and on this and the following day rain was restricted mainly to western and southern coasts of the South Island. However, a few showers were reported in the Auckland Province. There was another period of general rain with the passage of a trough on the 12th and, early on the following morning, a violent thunderstorm around Christchurch brought some brief but exceptionally heavy rain. Apart from this the 13th was a day of south-westerlies, with showers in a few districts. For the next three days an anticyclone over the North Island brought fair weather to most parts of the country. However, rain was reported on the 14th in Invercargill, and showers affected the West Coast and some coastal districts of the North Island at times.

With the approach of a complex trough of low pressure, rain set in on the 17th on the West Coast and in Northland and Bay of Plenty. A depression formed and moved slowly eastward across the

country during the next four days, and rain soon became general. Many thunderstorms were reported in the Auckland Province on the 18th. After winds had turned to cold southerlies over the South Island on the 19th there were two days of heavy rain in Canterbury and Otago, with some flooding; but the weather cleared on the West Coast. Snow was reported on the high country. On the 22nd and 23rd the depression was moving away to the east of the North Island and rain was confined mainly to eastern districts, clearing from the south.

During the last seven days of the month northern and eastern districts of the North Island received considerable rain as a depression remained almost stationary to the west of Northland. On the 28th and 29th thunderstorms were reported in Northland, and heavy rain caused surface flooding on some highways. The South Island enjoyed good weather apart from rain at times on the Kaikoura coast and on the last three days in Southland. By the 30th conditions had improved over most of the Auckland Province as the depression moved past North Cape and away to the east.
